Dressed for Battle

In the final installment of the mini series on The Believer's Warfare we took a close look at the classic passage on the subject, Ephesians 6:10-18. Here I have taken a more practical approach than you have probably heard in the past. Building on the foundation of both the previous messages dealing with our enemy and God's Weapons for our Warfare and also the text of the Book of Ephesians that leads up to this passage we will get a real sense of what is actually going on here. How would you like to know whether you possess this armor and how to know for sure that you are able to use it as God has intended? Give it a listen and let me know if this does not clear up some fuzziness that you may have had regarding this subject.

The Weapons of Our Warfare

As the Apostle writes again to the church that he founded in Corinth he strives to correct their view of the Gospel as delivered by himself, an apostle of Jesus Christ. He fights against their culturally skewed understanding of his apostleship and therefore the message that he has given them. He defends the truth against the enemies of Christ who take the form of ministers of righteousness. This is where the battle lies and with whom we must be engaged. This is "Spiritual Warfare!"

Knowing Our Enemy

He that will play with Satan's bait, will quickly be taken with Satan's hook. The promise of conquest is made over to resisting, not to arguing: "Resist the devil, and he will fly from you," James 4:7. Ah, souls! were you better at resisting than at disputing, your temptations would be fewer. - John Owen

Gratitude!

What motivated your Christian life? Often times we are motivated by guilt and fear. One recent study by a psychologist declares that faith has nothing to do with good behavior rather it is an innate sense that we must measure up to cultural standards and our own feelings of guilt that really make the difference. Some churches teach that guilt is wrong and that religion teaches us to find what is godly within us and than as soon as we can dispense with our feelings of guilt we can live for God. Interesting as they may be, we must compare these ideas to what the Bible says about this subject just as we must with any subject. Take a look with me at Paul's letter to the Colossians and see what he says is the motivation to live for Christ.

That My Glory Would Sing His Praises!

In the 30th Psalm, The title tells us that it is presented at the "Dedication of the House of David." How are we to understand this? Is it the dedication of a building, or is it more significant than that? As I studied it I came to the conclusion that David is more likely dedicating his family and his posterity. Do you want to dedicate your family to the Lord? You should. Listen to what David prayed and sang as he did.

God: Revealed!

God has declared Himself to mankind through the creation. The fact that we exist points unmistakeably to a Creator who existed before it and is not of it and has the ability to create it. Common sense tells us that it did not make itself. That is logically impossible. Just this is enough information to make us accountable before God. Yet in His love He has taken another step and revealed Himself in a special way, through His Word. Even with this man still rebels against that revelation. We need more than just information about God. We need God! What is your response to God's revelation of Himself?

The Lord Sustained Me

Have you ever really blown it? I mean really blown it big time and then the consequences set in. Usually at that point we resign ourselves to the idea that we are on our own. What would God want to do with someone like me? I am a wicked and sinful person. It is easy to develop that kind of attitude when we are justly suffering in the consequences of our own sin. Yet as we look at the third Psalm we see that as David was very much in this situation his response was to cry out to God and take real confidence in His grace and mercy. This is a lesson that we need to learn as well.

Love's Confrontation

When John's account of Jesus' life and his suffering for sin was completed by his relating the resurrection it still was not over. The last chapter of his Gospel is the perfect capstone. After all, the Gospel is so much more than just a great story of sacrifice, it is the real benefit of that sacrifice the is demonstrated as Jesus seeks out Peter and brings him to the place of realizing the magnitude of his sin and the magnitude of Jesus' forgiveness. This is the part of the story that we need not just to hear but experience!

Glory in This!

Living in a culture that has forgotten its God and being commanded to take the knowledge of God to them.... That is where Jeremiah was in about 600 BC and that is where we as Christians are at in 21st century America. What is it about God that we need to communicate to our culture? Is it really much different than Jeremiah's message? As we examine these two verses for Jeremiah 9 we will see that as God does not change, neither does fallen man and neither does our message.

They Believed

As we see the women come to the tomb in John 20 it begins a flow of events that encompass a week as Jesus reveals Himself to His disciples. In the course of this time they realize that God had spoken of these events before hand through the Scriptures and through Jesus' own words to the disciples. It was when their experience was corroborated by the Word of God that faith became real. It is so important to realize this even for us as 21st century believers. Our faith must be what God says it must be. Faith in our faith is worthless, faith in God's Word is what saves.
