What's The Plan?

James confronts some folks in the Church as he writes to them and tells then that their plans do not include God. We all make plans. Planning is good. But sometimes we forget that God has the authority to override our plans. James gives us practical wisdom for planning and trusting God even when our plans fail.

What is Faith?

The writer of Hebrews is encouraging his audience during trying times and he shows them that faith has always been what held God's people in place. After much comparing of Jesus to the Old Covenant he encourages them to trust God as the those of old had trusted Him and all the more since they had the fulfillment of promises that the former generations never saw. The history of God's faithfulness and His bringing to pass all that He had formerly promised is a great ground of hope for the Believer. Living in faith and looking forward in hope requires a looking back at God's faithfulness.

A Place For God's People

Jesus continues to comfort His disciples after the Last Supper as He predicts His death and Peter's denial but affirms that it is all a part of God's plan and the in the end His going away will bring them into God's presence for eternity.

Have You Had Your Bath?

In John 13 Jesus is taking His last opportunity to prepare His disciples for His soon coming death. As He sits with them at the Passover meal, His Last Supper, He begins to serve them in a menial way as He assumes the position of a lowly slave by washing their feet. Peters abrupt refusal to allow such a thing provides Him with a great teaching opportunity. Jesus tells him, “He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you." This sets the stage for a profound spiritual truth. Have you had your bath?

Offense or Opportunity?

What a blessing to look closely at this little gem of a letter. As the Apostle Paul appeals to this man Philemon, for him to forgive his runaway slave and send him back to him so that he might help in the proclamation of the Gospel we learn some important aspects of that very Gospel. Do I reflect the forgiveness that Christ has shown me when I am offended by someone else? What is the cost of unforgiveness? What is the benefit of acknowledging that every good thing in me is a gift from Him?

That You May Believe

Jesus speaks to His disciples on the eve of His crucifixion, as they finish their Passover meal. After washing their feet He turns to teaching and encouraging them. Jesus needs to prepare His disciples for the most devastating event of their lives. His own death which they do not understand the reason for yet. In preparing them He quotes Psalm 41 regarding Judas' betrayal and then predicts it Himself and tells the disciples, "Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am" (John 13:19) Jesus gives His disciples a firm foundation on which to rest their faith. The Old Testament, their Bible, foretold the events of that very night with some detail though the passage Jesus quoted to them at that time was 1,000 years old. Jesus' own words would be fulfilled in just a few hours and the basis of the promises He would go on to make in those coming hours would all rest on that foundation. Jesus was able to tell them what would happen before it did. He was able to point to the Bible that had predicted it for more than 1,000 years. He was assuring His disciples that whatever happened it was a part of His plan. We can rest on that same foundation as we await the fulfillment of other promises that He has made concerning His return and our eternal state. This is not a blind leap to believe in Jesus and eternal life. Jesus made a rational foundation for these things and we need to trust Him and wait with expectation for all that He has said to come to pass!

The Mystery of Godliness

What is the key to living for Christ? I don't know if there is a single key, but I believe that the Apostle Paul gives us a major one as He writes to the young pastor Timothy. In the midst of a letter filled with instruction about living and leading in a godly way Paul inserts a short statement about the nature of Christ and His ministry. Why does he do this? I believe that it is a key and as we seek to understand Paul and how he presents the Gospel in other letters in our New Testament we can unlock one of the greatest incentives to living a godly life..

Camouflage Christians

Do we trust God and take Him at His word? This is a defining question for all who call themselves "Christian." Sometimes His Word can be hard to accept, things like Hell, election, etc are doctrines that make us think and wonder. Yet God is God and His Word is true and what do we do when we encounter those who oppose it?

Unmistakably God

God has clearly and completely revealed Himself and His plan to redeem those who would trust Him. His Word so clearly states from the Genesis and throughout Old Testament what His plan has been from the beginning. Not only has he told us through prophecy, but He has given us more creative expressions of His plan through the ceremonial laws of Israel which pointed directly to the ministry of Christ. As we consider these things we should be brought to awe and wonder and praise Him for completing the redemption that He has demonstrated to us!

The Mission

As Jesus enters Jerusalem there are some Greeks who come to meet Him. He uses this as an opportunity to tell the people plainly what His mission is, what He is about to accomplish as the time has come for Him to be glorified. That mission is not to help them achieve a better life in the here and now. It is not to deal with the ruler of Rome and his claim on them as a nation. It is much more profound than any of that. He has come to remove the ruler of this world. To deal with the problem of sin once and for all and to bring many with Him into the true Kingdom of God, His Church.
