When the Wind Blows (Matthew 14: 22-33)
In the nursery rhyme, when the wind blows it is to rock the cradle. In our Scripture the boat is like a cradle where we will see the infancy of the disciple’s faith grow. Fear is going to make two appearances in our story. First, the disciples are afraid because they do not understand that Jesus is with them in the storm. Dale Bruner writes, “So Jesus says, ‘courage I am! Fear Not.'†Jesus is not just identifying himself as It’s me your friend, your teacher; this is a revelation that the God “I AM’ is in their midst. These are the words of Isaiah coming to life… Fear Not for I have redeemed you, I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I am with you. And through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you… For I AM the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. We always associate the word through with faith…through the waters. It takes more faith to go through something than around it. Our faith is strengthened.
