More than Survivors

As we look at our text this morning in Acts 17, what might we learn from the life of Paul back in the first century, in terms of sharing the Gospel, that might translate into the challenges we face today? Instead of Paul being overwhelmed with what he faced when he entered the city of Athens - a city not unlike what we have today (i.e. pluralistic in terms of differing philosophies and inclusive in the sense that there were many gods); Paul determined to be More than a Survivor by hoisting the sails of opportunity. How did he do that? What can this chapter teach us in terms of engaging a largely pagan culture? Are we willing to follow the example of Paul and look for connecting points  with those outside of Christian faith? Are we willing to move beyond the anticipated disrespect and resistance in order to bear faithful witness? And are we willing to show the same kind of interest in what others value, as we expect others to show in what we value?

It Began With a Dream: Macedonia

The jailer….rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. He…asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”  They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus , and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16.30-31 Today we are having a combined worship service with mixed styles, lots of people and the desire to use every possible seat in our sanctuary. It will be pretty informal and celebratory. Our pastor will continue our walk through the Book of Acts. Our service of worship will end with  some immersion baptisms with testimonies.

The Vital and Victorious Connection: The First Church Council

One of the worst ways to do life is to do it alone. That applies to absolutely everybody, but it especially applies to Christians and churches. The truth is, Lone Rangers never win alone.  Today in the Word, as we continue our study of Acts, we come to Luke’s account of the first church council in Jerusalem. As meetings go, this one wasn’t boring - great issues were at stake. In fact, the integrity of the gospel was at stake. And great lessons are to be learned by the early church. As we progress through the Book of Acts and think about the risen Lord, the life-giving Spirit, and the original emerging church, keep asking yourself, “Who are we now and what should we be like?”

The Wider Christian Mission: Encountering Estranged New Worlds

The book of Acts is a missionary book. Like the rest of Scripture it is about God’s mission to redeem a broken world. The missionary God sent is His one and only Son. He sent him into an estranged world so that rebels can be restored. The missionary Son sends His 12 disciples into the world to spread the good news (gospel) of God’s saving love. The Father and Son sent the missionary Holy Spirit to effectively call people to Himself. And in each place “all who were appointed for eternal life believed.” (13.48) Today in the Word we look at Acts 13 and 14. It chronicles the first missionary journey of the church through Paul and Barnabas. Here we see the wider Christian mission - beyond Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria - into all kinds of strange and estranged new worlds. But in each place, the gospel is supremely relevant to the needs of all kinds of people. This was their mission, but it is our mission as well. A look backwards, will help us go forward as we encounter other strange new worlds the gospel must enter.

Paul, Peter, and the Whole Gospel

Building on the foundation provided in our exploration of the first eight chapters of the NT Book of Acts, today's reading and sermon focus our attention on three aspects of the "Good News" (the "Gospel") that God has graciously given us in Christ. These three are conversion, healing and resurrection. The account of Paul's conversion, his turning to Christ in faith, the healing of a paralyzed man named Aeneas and the raising of Tabitha, a woman deeply loved by many people on the margins of life whom she had helped, give us not just information, but beautiful pictures of the grace of God and an appreciation of the fact that the Whole Gospel is larger than we usually think it to be. We tend to be more familiar with the role of the Gospel in conversion, but the Gospel never stops with conversion. As we will see today, the Gospel can also bring us into an experience of God's gracious provision of healing and resurrection. We know about the importance of faith in the process of conversion, but even in the account of Paul's conversion, we see that God's grace is not merely "spiritual," but a whole-body experience. This is especially evident in the healing of Aeneas and the raising of Tabitha.  But what does all of this mean for us today? Have we in the church lost something precious that the Scripture and the Spirit would have us find again?

The Unstoppable, Spirit-filled, Missional Mess Known as the Church

Our journey through Acts is now taking a new turn. The book is honing in on a second generation of leadership, shifting attention away from the "original apostles" to new gospel-carriers like Stephen and Paul. Sandwiched between these two men is an evangelist often overlooked -- Philip. Yet Luke (the author of Acts) shows Philip to be a uniquely gifted and qualified man for the specific ministries God had in store for him. Today we mine the depths of Philip's ministry in chapter 8, and we'll hopefully pull out a few gems of wisdom that profoundly inform who we are and what we do as Christ's body. Some of our discoveries will be inspiring and reassuring; others will be sobering and harshly honest. We'll spend some time parsing out important technicalities of theology. We'll also pause for moments of deep personal introspection. Acts 8 really is all over the map, just as Philip was!

When It's All Been Said and Done

This morning we continue our study through the book of Acts and look at chapters 6 and 7. The title this morning is taken from the song by Jim Cowen. As we look at the first martyr of the early Church and the way in which God used Stephen both in living and in dying, it gives us pause to examine our own lives and the legacy that will be left behind - a legacy that needs to be examined while there is still time. A plaque that hung over the kitchen table where I grew up, I shall never forget: Only one life will soon be past. Only what’s done for Christ will last- or in Paul’s words to the Romans, If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord (14:8). When it’s all said and done, there’s just one thing that matters - Did I do my best to live for Truth? Did I live my life for You?

Assaults on the Church Part 3 - Getting Sidetracked

Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts…Currently, in our Sunday morning services, our pastors are leading us in an expositional series on this powerful book. Do you know the book of Acts? We encourage you to read it through again. If you want to see an early portrait of the New Testament church, if you want to see the church on the move, if you want to see the real and original emerging church, if you want to get the 21st century church refocused, the best place to go is the book of Acts. No sooner was the early church launched by Christ and his apostles, then it was vigorously attacked. Some of the assaults were overt, others were subtle. Today in the Word, we will consider the third way the infant New Testament church was challenged.
