Assaults on the Church Part 2: Corruption from within

Today in our service we honor our fathers and the critical role they play in marriage, family, children’s lives, the marketplace and government. More than ever, we need fathers who receive our Heavenly Father’s love, who live to please Him, and who model both His strength and His love. Today in the Word we will continue our series through the Book of Acts. We are taking a prolonged look at the early church in order to get a better understanding of what CCPC should be as a church. Today’s text from Acts 4 and 5 speaks about a second assault on the infant church, to thwart its effectiveness and push it off track. Notice there is something in this passage for everyone.

Counterassaults on the Church Part 1: Destroy the Church By Force

One of the dangers in looking backwards (as we are in our study of the book of Acts) is that we tend to romanticize the past. We have a very selective, even idyllic view of things that happened and we forget the hard things. That is especially true with the church. Christians often think that everything was wonderful and easy in those early years. Yet as we carefully read the book of Acts, we find all kinds of challenges. But most of all, we find a counterassault against the church by the enemy of Christ. In Acts chapters 4-6, Satan is only named once, but he is behind a threefold assault on the existence and mission of the church. Today in the world we will look at his first counterassault—the assault of persecution. Unfortunately, this story is not “long ago and far away” because we are now living in the greatest age of persecution. So why did it happen? How did they respond? And how did they pray?

In the Name of Jesus… Walk

This Sunday we continue our journey through Acts with a beautiful account of Christ's healing power unleashed through faith. Our Scripture reading reveals God's special affection for a very special people. This picture of the wonder of God's grace and how it comes to us and through us is a mystery that is both baffling and, at the same time, one that produces a reassuring hope and a powerful sense of purpose.  Today we are also going to participate in the Lord's Supper...another mystery that can baffle us as we try to understand it but, at the same time, can produce great reassurance, hope and a strong sense of our purpose. Though it may not seem obvious at first, there is a connection between the healing of this man crippled from birth and our Communion. Both of these point to what the Lord has done for us and what the Lord desires to do through us. We have been called to a healing experience as well as to a healing role and today we pray that the Spirit fills and prepares us as we read, reflect and share in the Lord's Table together.

The Feast That Never Ended

There is something refreshing about going back to beginnings. In Acts chapters 1-7 we learn about the earliest days of the church. Chapter two is particularly striking as we learn about God’s gracious gift to the church, Peter’s proclamation of the gospel, and for what the early church was known. Today in the Word, we will consider the event of Pentecost, Peter’s important explanation about what God was doing. As you listen to the reading and hear the Word explained today, ask God to renew your faith and fill you with His Holy Spirit. Pentecost Sunday In the Christian year today is a celebration of the coming of the Holy Spirit at Pentecost (Acts 2). The season of Pentecost celebrates the work of the Spirit in our lives. The Holy Spirit is not an “it” but a Person of the Trinity and the strength of Christ in the church. He draws us to Jesus. He convicts us of sin. He persuades and enables us to believe. He unites us with Christ and mediates the presence of Jesus to us, bringing all the benefits of salvation to our souls. He gives gifts. He leads. He fills. He comforts. He brings forth spiritual fruit. And the Spirit always seems to throw the floodlight back onto Christ.

The Foundation of Every Church

Mathew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts… If you want to see an early portrait of the church, the place to go is the New Testament book of Acts. If you want to refocus the church on basics, go to is the book of Acts. If you want to see the church on the move, the go to the book of Acts. If you want to see the real and original emerging church, go to the book of Acts. This year CCPC is 29 years old. As we approach our 30th anniversary year in 2010, one of the best things we could do is to take another look at the acts of the risen Lord through the Holy Spirit in the early church. This Sunday we begin an expositional series on this powerful book that will take us through to Advent. Today in the Word as we look at Acts chapter one, we want to think about “The Foundation of Every Church.”

The Benefits of Believing and Belonging

The influences of individualism, privatism, pluralism, relativism, and anti-institutionalism in our society today has convinced many people that they can believe in God without belonging to His Body. Today’s message will focus on six benefits that are forfeited by believers who hold to such a philosophy. The acronym BELONG will help us remember what God’s Word teaches us about the values added to the lives of those who commit themselves to Christ’s Body-the Church, values that the Body of Christ is committed to providing because you can’t get them anywhere else! Identifies B in Christ (Ephesians 2:19). Provides E________________ (Hebrews 10:24-26). A place to L______________ (I Corinthians 12:4-7). O___________ protection (Hebrews 13:7) N____________ us through life (Ephesians 4:16) Accountability for G_____________ Colossians 3:16) BELONG!

You Are My Family Redeemer

We live in a world of brokenness. There is no place where this is more evident than in the life of families. The signs of this brokenness and dysfunction are all around us. It is particularly evident as we look at the younger generation and their longing for community, for mentors and for authenticity. What is the hope for families? The answer is found in the Bible. The Bible is the story of God’s re-encounter with a broken world through Jesus Christ. One of the ministries of Christ is that he puts broken things back together. Today in the Word, we will read a section from the book of Ruth. It is a story about a kinsman or family redeemer. This picture however is evocative of the saving power of Christ. On Mother’s Day, we not only wish God’s blessings on all the moms here today, but we point you to the one who puts broken things back together. We encourage you to prayerfully read through all the Bible passages listed above to get the big picture.

What the Bible Says about the Bible: A Bible in 90 Days Coda

Now that many of us have read through the Bible from cover to cover over 90 days, it is important to take some time and think about what is the Bible and how it functions in the church. Is there a grand theme that ties it all together? What do you think that theme is? How should we use the Bible as individuals, as a church and as pastors? And what affect should it have on us? Today in the Word we will add a final coda to our Bible in 90 Days season.
