The Jesus You Know

We are delighted to have Dr. Duane Litfin in our pulpit this morning. Dr. Litfin is Wheaton’s seventh president. He holds two doctorates - from Purdue University and Oxford University. Before going to Wheaton, Dr. Litfin served as a pastor and as a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary. He and his wife, Sherri, have three married children and nine grandchildren. Many colleges and universities both in America and worldwide started from Christian roots. Many have drifted from that original purpose - that has not been the case with Wheaton College. Wheaton was founded in 1860 “for Christ and His kingdom”. It is an academically rigorous Christian liberal arts college in northern Illinois that has produced generations of Christian leaders. It exists to strengthen the church and promotes the development of effective Christians.

Celebrating the Word of God

Over the next few days we are going to be celebrating the Word of God and the wonderful accomplishment many have made in reading the Bible from cover to cover in 90 days. In our service, we will have a time of testimony and praise to God for how He has used His Word to speak to you and work in your life. Don’t be bashful. Let the redeemed of the Lord speak! Today in the Word, Pastors Don Sweeting and Marty Martin will be talking about the power of the Word and where we go next. Then on Tuesday afternoon we have a pastor’s conference at CCPC co-sponsored by Zondervan and the Bible in 90 Days. Join us on Tuesday evening for our Bible in 90 Days Celebration!

The Tree and Its Leaves

If only... If only another International Summit could fix things. If only a signed nuclear arms treaty could ensure peace. If only someone could solve the crisis in the Middle East. If only someone could really fix the environment. If only someone could end the oppression that takes place all over the world. If only someone could stop the world’s incessant warring. If only someone could heal the national and ethnic divides that simmer just underneath the surface. If only some international body could truly bring every nation together. If only free trade could solve things.  If only some charismatic leader could do it. If only, if only, if only. It seems like the troubles of this world are mounting, and yet even our best efforts cannot effect the deep healing that needs to take place. So is there any hope for our world? The Bible says there is. The Bible ends with a message of warning and a message of hope. The message of warning involves a choice. The message of hope involves a river, a throne and a tree. Since January, our church has been on a unique journey. Over 600 of us have made a commitment to read the entire Bible from cover to cover in 90 days. This week many of us come to the end of our reading. We entered Holy Week reading the last book of the Bible -Revelation. Today in the Word we will consider our resurrection hope and the healing of the nations

The Mistake of the Nations

The G20 nations meet and try to figure out the world economic mess. People riot in the streets thinking they have it all wrong - that they have somehow made a terrible mistake. Could it be that we have? We have been reading the Bible in 90 Days and many of us are in the last book of Revelation. Today in the Word we will look at Palm Sunday through the lens of Revelation. Revelation is like a set of reading glasses that help us make sense of the Palm Sunday procession when Jesus entered Jerusalem one day and was rejected the next. As we now enter holy week, walk slowly, keep your eyes and ears open; read attentively, open to the Spirit’s voice, and hear the Word of the Lord.

The Promise and Presence

Where is God? Why can’t I find Him? Does He care about my life or condition? Does He know what I am going through? Does He know what his people are going through? Why is it that He seems so distant? These are the questions we ask from time to time. Is He far off? As many of us read through the Bible in 90 Days scripture has a stunning response to our questions. Today in the Word we will continue to explore some of the large and unifying themes of the Bible. If you missed some of the previous messages, you can get a CD in the narthex after the service or on our website.

The Scarlet Thread

The theme of sacrifice and the need for a blood-atonement is a difficult theme for our squeamish age. But it is a central theme in the Bible. As we read through the Bible in 90 days and we see the unity of God’s redemptive plan, it is important to follow this red trace through the Scriptures. The Bible says that “the life is in the blood”,(Leviticus 17:11) and “without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins” (Hebrews 9:22). The New Testament says that Christ with His blood “purchased for God’s people from every tribe and language and people and nation to make them a kingdom of priests to serve God and reign with Him.” What is going on? As we move through the season of Lent and approach Holy Week it is important to move from squeamishness to understanding.

Awaken

Our theme for Student Ministries this year is AWAKEN. If we are honest with ourselves, we have been asleep in many ways. Many of us as believers are sleeping when it comes to living out and expressing our lives in Christ. In the book of Ephesians we are told who we once were apart from Christ: dead in our transgressions, separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship, foreigners without hope, aliens living in darkness. But through the blood of Christ we have redemption and have been brought near to Him. We have been reconciled. We are alive, no longer foreigners and aliens we are now children of God and are living in the light. When we truly see how fortunate we are as believers in Christ coming from darkness into the light we can truly appreciate, how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ (Ephesians 3:18-19).
