Why I Trust the Bible
Many of you are about to embark on a 90-day journey of reading through the Bible that culminates in Holy Week before the celebration of Easter. Given the extraordinary events of the Fall and the stunning gyrations of this economy, now more than ever, we need to get our spiritual bearings. There is no better way to do this than to read through God’s Word together. Pastors Don Sweeting and Bruce Finfrock will help us prepare for this journey. Today in the Word we will step back to think about the book we call God’s Book, Holy Bible, Sacred Scripture, and The Word of God.

The Disturbed Heart
This is indeed a special week in the Christian calendar, as we celebrate what Christians called - “The Feast of the Nativity of Jesus Christ.†During Advent we have been looking at some of the heart conditions that can cause us to miss His coming. Today in the Word we will consider The Disturbed Heart. Having looked at a few people who missed that first Christmas, we have seen more deeply into our own hearts. We looked at the average heart and its many idols. We looked at the preoccupied heart of Caesar Augustus, and also the unaffected heart of the religious leaders. Join us this morning as we continue to prepare our hearts not only for this Christmas, but also for His second coming.

The Unaffected Heart
When Jesus was born into this world, many people were unable to recognize Him. Their hearts were unaffected. Some were deeply disturbed at His coming. Some were too preoccupied to even notice he was here. This Advent season we encourage you to Let Every Heart Prepare Him Room.

The Preoccupied Heart
When Jesus was born into this world, many people were unable to recognize Him. Their hearts were not ready to accept Him. Some were deeply disturbed at His coming. Some were too preoccupied with kingdom-building. Some were just plain too busy. How much like us! This Advent Season we invite you to prepare your heart to celebrate His birth.

Part 1: The Average Heart
We often don’t spend time analyzing the Advent and Christmas carols we so often hear and sing in December. Yet a common thread among many of them is probing how our heart responds to Jesus and His coming. One phrase from “What Child is This?†preaches, “let loving hearts enthrone Him.†“Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus†beseeches God: “rule in all our hearts alone.†Perhaps the most poignant of all, though, comes from the first verse of “Joy to the World,†which proclaims, “let every heart prepare Him room.†It’s recalling Bethlehem on the night of Mary and Joseph’s arrival - crowded, overbooked - and cleverly using the city as a metaphor for the human heart. Is there room in our heart for Christ, or do we find ourselves overbooked? Many Christians jump straight to Christmas when they hit December. But the Church has a beautiful tradition, called Advent, to provide a season of preparation for Christmas. These next four weeks, our explorations in the Bible will meander around how we go about letting our hearts “prepare Him room.†Many of you may think this a well-worn theme (“oh, I’ve heard this beforeâ€). Our encouragement to you is: Don’t get too comfortable. God just might come at you from new angles this Advent season!

The Worst Financial Mistake You Could Ever Make
It is obvious our economy does not need cosmetic cures and quick fixes that merely put a bandaid on the problem. It needs deep cures. When it comes to the management of our own households, the same holds true. The need is not simply to pay off a credit card here or there or to get out of a hole. That’s just a temporary fix. What we need is a radical reorientation. Today in the Word Pastor Don will bring the third and final message of this series. What is the worst financial mistake you could ever make? What comes to mind? If you missed any part of this series you can hear the whole thing by purchasing a sermon CD in the narthex or listening to a sermon online. An advent brochure is available in the narthex listing all the events for this year’s Advent and Christmas season. Take some time to read it through.

Handling your Biggest Loans
In some ways the financial pundits are right. It is all about loans. Our current market mess came to light when loans were given that people could not pay back. Banks and businesses depended on those loans. Now many institutions are in trouble. Some have filed for bankruptcy, others are treading water. The government is deciding which loans to back. Today we will be thinking about handling our biggest loans. What are they? A house loan, a business loan, a car loan, a loan for an appliance? Or is it something else? Remember, we are interested in deep cures.
