John 1: 14-18 And the Word Became Flesh
With laser-like clarity and awe-inspiring beauty John brings his introduction to a close. And with his words we are drawn into the telling of the story of Jesus about to begin … a story of glory. The glory of the Father revealed through the life of the Son. The Word took on flesh and dwelt among a sinful world to pour out grace and truth in full measure upon all who will believe. We get to see the Glory! God has been explained to the world through the life and ministry of Jesus … Do you understand Him?
John 1: 9-13 The Word's Light to the World
Johns introduction is a masterful display of both literature and theology. Track it with me … The Logos (Word) is the second member of the Trinity. He didnt just get born that first Christmas, He has always existed. In fact, all of creation was made through Him. He gave life to all things, and sustains all of life. All men bear the stamp of the Word on their soul. Long before the pages of the New Testament open, His promised coming is anticipated. Then John the Witness (or Baptist) shows up on the scene and things are really heating up … the Word has come in the flesh for the entire world to see. But how will people receive Him? Lets see what John has to say about that this morning …
John 1: 6-8 Witness of the Word
This week John transitions the story of God by hitting fastforward. Its almost as if with one breath, John moves from Jesus who was with God in the beginning to the introduction of the true light which was coming into the world. And quite frankly, verses 6-8 seem to be a strange interjection. The opening paragraph would read just fine without these three sentences. But for John, and for us, the story of God would be incomplete without speaking of this pivotal character, John - the Witness to the Word.
John 1: 3-5: The Works of the Word
Last week we discovered the Word, or Logos, who is Eternal, Triune, and Divine. The Word is Gods self-revelation, making heaven known to man. This Word, which was with God in the beginning, and in fact was God is now described as the Life and the Light. And in John’s two-fold description of the Word we discover two very powerful activities the Word accomplishes. We see the works of the Word are in fact the works of the Word incarnate – Jesus, the Life and Light of the world. 1. The Life-Bringer 1:3-4 What this means Why this matters 2. The Light-Bearer 1:5 What this means Why this matters Why Believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Because He is the powerful Word through whom all things were created, bringing life and light to men.
John 1: 1-2: The Eternal Word
People have so many ideas and theories on just who Jesus of Nazareth is … but who is he really? Often described as the greatest book ever written, the Gospel of John has one clear and simple mission – That you would believe that Jesus is the Son of God. As we journey through the life of Jesus, his miracles and messages will overwhelmingly convince you that He is the only Son of God, and Savior of your world. We begin the story before the beginning with the Eternal Word and what He is like. What does John want me to believe and why? 20:31 What is the Word? 1:1-2 What is the Word like? 1:1-2 Why does it matter? 1:1-2 Why Believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Because He is the Eternal Word revealed from heaven and revealing heaven
George Mueller: A Life of Faith
What is this sermon about? I love to learn from those who have gone before us … men and women of faith who have exhibited extraordinary faith and faithfulness to the cause of Christ, the glory of God, and the salvation of souls. I was in high school when I reluctantly read my first missionary biography, and I was hooked. From that time forward it has been my practice to be walking with some dead saint who has left a great witness for me to follow. Years later I heard pastor John Piper preach a biography … it opened my eyes to how my relationship with these great saints could be used in discipling others. So, here’s what I’m thinking – I’ll use the last Sunday of the year to let history speak to us, to learn from a dead guy (or gal), and to make a New Years resolution as a church. I’ll bring a call for us to live out a particular characteristic from the life of a saint that we will seek to grow in over the coming year. Our saint: George Mueller. Our characteristic to resolve to grow in: Faith. This is going to be fun, are you ready? How should I listen to this sermon? Heres my word of advice – Listen like youre sitting with a wise grandfather over a cup of tea and he wants to share the most important things he ever learned in life. Don’t take notes, and don’t try to outline the sermon. Just open your heart to the message of a life lived to the glory of God and let the Spirit impress upon you the overwhelming sense of how you can live your life to the glory of God with greater resolve.
Rejoice with Enduring Joy
Christmas comes once a year but reminds us of a day that has no end. Advent joy is an expression of the enduring eternal joy of heaven. The joy of the Lord has no end, and what we celebrate in part through the Advent season we will celebrate in fullness on that great and glorious Day with the risen Lord. 1. Christmas Joy … 2. Meets Human Sorrow … 16:19-21 3. And Produces Enduring Joy … 16:22 4. Full Joy … 16:23-24 5. And Heaven Rejoices! Luke 15:7,10
Rejoice with Salvation Joy
Joy over anything less than being rescued from sin is an inferior rejoicing. But when our souls rejoice in the work of baby Jesus, we can celebrate and rejoice over all His good gifts. All rejoicing has in its echo a tone of gratitude for the birth of Jesus and His work on the cross.
Rejoice with Relational Joy
Joy has an object. The first object of joy is toward God for His gracious gift. The second object of joy is the human relationships we’ve been given which are intended to heighten our joy in Christ on a human dimension. All nations rejoice at the birth of Christ because it makes our humanness hopeful for something greater.
Rejoice with Overwhelming Joy
All expressions of joy should be inexpressible. That is to say that what we rejoice over is so magnificent that human expressions are weak and incomplete at best. The birth of Christ is such an event and must be captured by an inability to fully communicate the overwhelming great joy of God sending His Son. Let’s learn to speak of unspeakable joy and express inexpressible joy!
