I Peter 2:17-25

While there are no Christians slaves here today (in the New Testament sense) Peter’s teaching does have direct application to employees. We are to be submissive to those who are over us, whether they are kind or unkind to us. We, as believer’s, should never take advantage of Christian employers and we are compelled by the Word of God to give our best to our employers. In fact, we read often in Scripture that we are to do “everything we do as unto the Lord Jesus Christ” (Col. 3: 17, 23). Peter goes on to emphasize the need for “patient endurance” when we suffer wrongfully because that patient endurance is “pleasing to God” (v. 20), it follows the example of Jesus Christ (v. 21), and it displays the outworking of our redemption. Peter sums up his appeal by calling the believer to become an “underwriter” of Jesus Christ and to conduct ourselves in such a way that we draw people into relationship with Him. Jesus is the watchful Shepherd and our Overseer (employer/director) of our souls.
