Matthew 5 – 7

“You have heard that the ancients were told, ‘You shall not commit murder….But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother shall be guilty…whoever says to his brother, Raca…you fool, shall be guilty.”                                                                                                      Matthew 5:21 & 22

Principle: Value everyone.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery:’ but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”                  Matthew 5:27 & 28

Principle: Keep your heart pure

“Remember the Scripture that says, ‘Whoever divorces his wife, let him do it legally.  But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality causes her to commit adultery”               Matthew 5:31 & 32

Principle: Stop looking for easy outs.

“Again you have heard that it was said…‘You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord.’   But I say to you, do not swear at all….But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No.’”   Matthew 5:33, 34, & 37

Principle: Be a person of integrity

“You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.’  But I tell you not to resist an evil person. But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also.”                         Matthew 5:38 & 39

Principle: Give up your rights

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’  But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you”                                                                      Matthew 5:43 & 44

Principle: Think advancing the kingdom.

We struggle with these principles because…

  • They are contrary to our human nature.
  • We really do not believe they are true

Verse of the Week: seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”                                     Matthew 6:33
