2 Samuel 7:18-29 - Stand on God's Promise

David does the only think he can do after such great promices are give in the first half of Chapter 7 - He worships the Covenant God. That is what we should do in times where we don't often see the promises of God in reality. We tend to only trust promises that we can really see with our own eyes. David first responds to the only God who does all according to his own will. Then in vv. 23-24 David worship for the benefits of Israel, and finally he prayes back God's promises to God. We all can learn from David;s reaction to God merciful promises. In difficult times we to can turn to God and worship and pray back God's promises to Him.

2 Samuel 7 - Getting to Know the Covenant God

We all live and drift from foundational principles that we once believed. Every Christian (and non-Chirstian) must deal with this issue of "drift." 2 Samuel 7 deals with God's covenant to David which becomes a foundational underpinning to the New Covenant that We depend upon for our relationship with God. David is drifting to other man-centered ways of living. He thinks he knows what glorifies God and desires to build God a house. But God rebuffs that by putting the priority back on revealtion over human reason. We cannot start our understanding of God with human reason. God gives David and us his reason for not wanting a house at this time - namely his desire to give rest for his people. He says that I am not like pagan gods that require a house to be build before I will promise blessing in the future. God is the God of all grace. In the End we learn that neigher Death, or sin, or Time will nullify God's promises in the Davidic Covenant (which is unlike God's rejection of Saul). The cure for our drifting is to focus our lives on the God of the Covenant rather than just the covenant itself.

2 Samuel 5 - Kingdom Collage

The author here pastes together 4 different episodes fragments (Promise, Vision, Compromise and Victory) showing the establishment and ... all » confirmation of the Davidic Kingdom. The events in this chapter are not placed in chronological order but are included because they all emphasize the necessity in knowing the King of the kingdom. We learn that the character of God applies to all areas of Biblical faith. Today we need to learn that what is central to the kingdom is God Himself and not life enhansements that the kingdom provides. This passage will help you preach a God-centered Gospel of the Kingdom of God instead of trying to get decisions for the kingdom by selling life enhansements which tend to be man-centered.

2 Samuel 4 - Men without Godly Discernment

Since Abern is now dead, Ishbosheth looses his courage, but is still the last hinderence to the unifying of the Davidic Kingdom. 2 of Ishbosheth's raiders (Baanah & Rechab) take advantage of situations and murder Ishbosheth in his bedroom for the purpose to receiving a good position or posh government jobs in David's regeim. They tempt David to thank them for the diliverance of a gracious God, by bringing the head of Ishbosheth to him. David exhibits good discernment and has Baanah and Rechab's extremities cut off and executed. David will soon assume the promised kingdom but this text teach us that no injustice can establish the Kingdom of God.

2 Samuel 2:12-3:39 - Promise Rules

David is still waiting on God to fulfill His promise of a kingdom. He has shown humility in inquiring of God (2:1-8) about where the kingdom show start out. Now Abner has set up Ish-bosheth as the king of Judah in a rebellious move. This passage (2:12-3:39) shows the failure of Abner and Joab in their attempts set up a kingdom contrary to God's. We will look at 3 wrong ways to seeking God's kingdom, and then will be encouraged to trust that God's promises will prevail over the desires of men. This will encourage us to always seek God's Kingdom in Chirst first before all others. (Matthew 6:33)
