Help them Grow (Luke 2:39-40, 52)

During the Back-to-School Sunday celebration, Broadmoor's River contemporary service takes a look at how Christ grew and how we are to help our children grow. Jesus grew to increase in every way — spiritually, mentally, physically, in wisdom, in stature and in favor with God and people. This sermon takes a look at each of these traits and to examine how Christians are to grow as Christ and how to help children grow as Christ and in Christ.

Happy Nesting (Psalm 84)

We must dwell in God’s presence in the temple and then let God’s presence dwell in us as the temple. This song, about the awesome experience of entering into the holy place where God was present in both power and might, was sung while traveling to the temple in Jerusalem. The temple was a place for all to come home to. The Psalmist says, “Even the sparrow and the swallow build a nest and can find a home there.” Walter Brueggemann takes "the nesting of birds as a metaphor for the 'nesting' of worshipers who sing the happy songs of praise. The object of such happy nesting is the life of the worshiper found in 'my King and my God....'" the ultimate power of the universe and the center of our lives. An experience in the temple was both overwhelming powerful and intensely personal. The image of "nest" suggests a place of safety, nurture, and home "at home with God." Happy nesting, which is the longing for the surpassing blessing of the presence of God, is for all who trust in the Lord. When you see sparrows in a nest, they are just resting there – trusting and not worried about if a twig is going to fall out … the same applies to us.

Serving Leftovers? (Revelation 3:14-22)

Are we serving a Holy God our leftovers in our time, money and service. Our Holy God wants an active, abiding relationship with us. Our Creator deserves our best. The Church of Laodecia had become lukewarm - neither hot nor cold in their relationship to God. Are we the Church of Laodeica?
