Many people have finally realized that money can't buy happiness. Now they're trying credit cards.
I. (1-8) The Profitable Parable
A. (1-3) The Particulars Of The Parable
1. (1) The Rich Man
2. (1) The Unjust Steward
3. (1) The Accusation
4. (2) The Accountability
"What is this I hear about you? Give an account of your stewardship..."
You and I will be held accountable for what we do here on earth with what God has given us.
5. (3) The Stewards Problem
The Stewardship was being taken away He could not dig and did not want to beg.
B. (4-7) The Plan In The Parable
The Steward is planning for the future which is beyond his control.
C. (8) The Prudence Of The Parable
Prudence: skill and good judgment in the use of resources
1. The Rich Man Commended Him
More important, the manager has gained public favor for himself and for the master as a generous benefactor; if the master punishes the manager now, it would appear to the public that he were doing so because of the manager’s benevolent act. The criminal manager could be jailed, but he wisely stakes everything on his master’s honor as a generous man.
2. A Synonym For Shrewd Is Prudence
3. Money Planning Is A Good Thing
How many here think planning with money is a good thing?
If you deposit $200.00 each month @.12% Interest for 20 years = $198K Instead of $48,000.00
But what if you invested that in God's Kingdom?
The World says you will lose 4 times your investment in twenty years
But God says in Philippians 4:19 - He will supply all of our needs according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus
II. (9-12) The Profitable Principle
God encourages us to use His money to gain rewards in eternity.
Not because He needs it but because of His perspective of our problem in verse 13.
A. (9) Store Up Treasure In Heaven Now
1. Matthew 6:19-21
19 “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
2. You Can't Take It With You
1 Timothy 6:6-10 Now godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. 8 And having food and clothing, with these we shall be content. 9 But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
B. (10) Faithfulness Starts In Small Quantities
1. Wealth Is Always For A Purpose
III. (13-14) The Profitable Perspective
A. (13) We Can Only Serve One Master
William Barclay: Over and over again a man will expend twenty times the amount of time and money and effort on his pleasure, his hobby, his garden, his sport as he does on his church. Our Christianity will begin to be real and effective only when we spend as much time and effort on it as we do on our worldly activities.
1. What About The Tithe
Not specifically taught in NT
Paid by Abraham to Melchizedek, Gen. 14:20; Heb. 7:2–6.
Jacob vows a tenth of all his property to God, Gen. 28:22.
2. Malachi
Malachi 3:8-10 8 “Will a man rob God? Yet you have robbed Me! But you say, ‘In what way have we robbed You?’ In tithes and offerings. 9 You are cursed with a curse, For you have robbed Me, Even this whole nation. 10 Bring all the tithes into the storehouse, That there may be food in My house, And try Me now in this,” Says the Lord of hosts, “If I will not open for you the windows of heaven And pour out for you such blessing That there will not be room enough to receive it.
