Following Jesus Luke 9:49-62

I. Introduction:

II. (49-50) Brings A Challenge To Others

A. (50) Christianity Lived Out Brings Loving Challenges

1. Christ And His Claims

2. Our Culture

a)      Pornification Of Our Culture

b)     Lack Of Godly Examples

3. The Return Of Christ

III. (51-53) Requires Commitment

A. (51,53) To The Long-term Goals

As the ministry of Jesus is exploding He sets His face toward Jerusalem's Cross.

If you and I let the day to day situations overshadow the Long-Term Goals of Character, Sanctification, Holiness, and one day heaven this world can get us off track.

B. (53) Even During Opposition

Jesus’ spiritual lesson is that if we look back at our old life with longing, as the Israelites in the wilderness kept looking back at Egypt, then we aren’t fit for service in His kingdom.

IV. (54-56) Includes A Loving Spirit

A. (54) Background Of Reference

1. 2 Kings 1:10

God was Judging Ahaziah the king Of Samaria.

He fell through the lattice in his upper room and was injured badly.

So He sent to inquire of Baal-zubub (a god worshiped by the Philistines at Ekron).

In earlier times it meant "lord of the lofty abode" to the Philistines but the Jews renamed it "lord of the flies."

In the NT when Jesus cast out demons the religious rulers accused Him of working under the power of Baal-zubub.

So Elijah intercepts the men sent by King Ahaziah and tells them to go back and rebuke the king and say "Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-Zebub, the god of Ekron? Therefore you shall die of this injury"

So King Ahaziah sent three squads of fifty men to capture Elijah.

So the first captain and fifty men as they came for Elijah said "Man of God, the king hath said come down here."

So he sent another captain and fifty men. He said "man of God, come down quickly!"

So again a third captain and fifty men came.  But this captain went down to his knees and begged Elijah to come down.

So Elijah came down and reiterated what God had told him in the first place and Ahaziah died.

B. The Theme Of Luke

1. Luke 19:10

"the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

(57-62) Transition     - When three would-be disciples approached Jesus, He challenged them to put the Kingdom first before the comforts of life and the warmth of family ties. Following Jesus involves radical commitment.

The Three men could have become disciples, but they would not meet the conditions that Jesus laid down.

V.  (57-58) Demonstrates Real Faith

The first man was a scribe (Matt. 8:19) who volunteered to go until he heard the cost: he had to deny himself. Apparently he was accustomed to a comfortable home.

A. Walking By Faith

1. Trusting God For Each Days Needs

2. Trusting God For His Plan For Our Life

3. Trusting God When You Don't Understand

VI.  (59-60) Should Be Our Main Priority

The second man was called by Jesus (what an honor!)

A. Background Of The Verse

1. Called Matthew Out The Same Way

Luke 5:27 - Jesus Saw Matthew at his tax-collection office and said "follow Me."  And Matthew left everything and followed.

2. (59) He Is Asking For An Indefinite Delay

3. (60) Jesus Is Reiterating The Priority Of The Kingdom

B. Seek The Kingdom First

Matthew 6:31-34  “Therefore do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For after all these things the Gentiles seek. For your heavenly Father knows that you need all these things. 33 But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about its own things. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

VII.  (61-62) Leaves No Room For Divided Hearts

The third man also volunteered, but he could not follow Christ because he was looking back instead of ahead.

A. Divided Heart

1. Part Looking Forward

2. Part Looking Back

Philippians 3:12-14 Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. 13 Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind and reaching forward to those things which are ahead, 14 I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
