It is not really known how old the Cane Run Baptist Church is, but it can be traced back to a hand written document located in a family Bible, to the 1820’s. March 10, 1830 was the birth date of Delilah Vandyke, who later testified to have attended Cane Run Baptist Church since she was a very little girl. Sister Vandyke said she and her family regularly attended worship at the church. Based on the testimony of Sister Vandyke, that she spent all of her life in this Church, it can be estimated that the church was established in or around 1830.
A group of believers met under the leadership of the late Rev. Taylor at Cane Run Road and Rockford Lane. The Cane Run Baptist Church was later organized under the leadership of Reverend Taylor. As the years past the Church gradually increased and moved to a new location on Cane Run Road, between Hartlage Court and Crums Lane.
On Sept. 14, 1954 the Church purchased a plot of land located at 3332 Smith Road and built a home for worship. In 1958, through much faith, dedication, and sacrifice the churches first mortgage was burned.
In January of 1975 Robert Barrow was called as Pastor to lead the Cane Run Baptist Church. Under his leadership every unit of the Church began to grow. On November 14, 1992 property was purchased at 1455 Catalpa for the purpose of building a new Church facility to continue the ministry. In March of 1995 by divine providence the church was able to purchase a second plot of land that sat adjacent to the new site.
Through much faith prayer and sacrifice the Cane Run Baptist Church family was able to march into a new edifice in December of 1999. During this process the saints learned that God blesses us when we are unified and when we persevere.
In June of 2005 Cane Run unanimously elected a young fiery preacher named Norman Williams to become its 14th pastor. Under the leadership of Rev. Williams the church as experienced phenomenal growth spiritually, numerically, and financially. Under the leadership of Rev. Williams the church added several ministries that seek to enrich families and help individuals strengthen their faith.
God has richly blessed the Cane Run Family, taking us from being a small gathering of believers in Shively to being a thriving Urban Ministry. We are thankful for where God has brought us from but we are excited about what he has in store.
