A Study of 2nd Corinthians // Part 4 // Wednesdays // January 24, 2018 // CAPSTONE CHURCH SERMON

This week, Senior Pastor Parkey Cobern teaches part 4 of “A Study of 2nd Corinthians,” delving into the first of many book studies taking place this year. For the fourth part, Pastor Parkey looks at the treasure of the Spirit as addressed in 2 Corinthians 4.
The Holy Spirit ministry is pure in motive, pure in method, and pure in message! The apostle Paul had to defend himself as he stood in the position of authority under the Spirit rather than of the church, working tirelessly to build the trust of those who preached to that he was indeed qualified to teach! We need to ask ourselves some very important questions as a church to determine whether or not we are effectively working under the Holy Spirit.
  1. What gospel is the church proclaiming?
  2. How does the church measure success?
  3. Who is doing what--and for whose glory?
  4. How is the leadership lifestyle affecting the church?
  5. Does popularity guarantee good character?
  6. Who is accountable to whom?
This is the Identity Crisis. There has to be a purity of motive, method, and message coming out of the church! Even in the harshest of circumstances, Paul stated in 2 Corinthians 4 “we are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed!” This gives us hope because we know that trials on the outside strengthen us in the Spirit, and we know these trials are temporary, and that when trouble is handled biblically, it increases the glory given to God.
Fix your attention on Jesus and His Word. What is experienced in this world is temporary and is being used by God to increase His glory! (2 Corinthians 4:18) “So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.”
