Are You Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places? Striving to Love God's Best - Part 2

One way to think about ourselves is that we are created to love. We are a people who has abounding loves. We make choices about where to spend our time, attention, thoughts, affections. We do it all the time, but the question is are we loving rightly? Are the things we love or the people we love worth it? Another question is does our love for something or somebody really matches up with their worth? Paul's prayer for the Philippians asks God for an ever greater abounding love, but that abounding and overflowing must happen within the sphere of real knowledge and all discernment: truly knowing the value and worth of what we love and having the faculties to tell the difference between what is truly worthy of love.

Are You Looking for Love in All the Wrong Places? Striving to Love God's - Part 1

As we consider Paul's prayer for the Philippians, we observed that Paul was praying for the Philippian believers' love to abound. Since their love was such an important request before God for Paul to pray for, we took the time to more carefully think about our love: what is love, who and what we love, and how we love. This gives us a solid foundation to stand to discern not only the quality of our love but also the worthiness of its object.

The Sweet and Satisfying Savor of Jesus-Christ-Enraptured / Gospel-Enveloped Friendships Part 3

Paul expresses his love for the Philippian believers. We observed and talked about how his love expressed his life and being enveloped by the Gospel. His confidence, joy, and thanksgiving is based upon his loving the believers in Philippi, having them in his heart. Since it is a fact that all Christians love other Christians and should be growing in their love of other Christians, the fact that Paul loves the believers in Philippi demonstrates an outworking of Gospel consistent Christianity. It is so reflective of God's plan and purpose that Paul calls God as his witness to verify that he longs for the believers with the affection of Christ.

The Sweet and Satisfying Savor of Jesus-Christ-Enraptured / Gospel-Enveloped Friendships Part 2

On this Father's Day, we, especially the fathers, are reminded from Paul's example how we ought to and can live in such a way where we live for the progress of the Gospel, the glory of Christ, and submitting ourselves to the loving wisdom of God's Word. Our partnership and common sharing together in the Gospel can be a great refreshment and strength to the souls of those who also seek the progress of the Gospel and the glory of Christ.

The Sweet and Satisfying Savor of Jesus-Christ-Enraptured / Gospel-Enveloped Friendships

Paul's loving relationship to the Philippian church demonstrates how much Paul clung to the Gospel and how much the Gospel had a grip upon his life. His thankfulness and love was grounded and motivated by His commitment to the Gospel and love for Christ and shows us an example of how our lives can and should be enveloped and enraptured by the Gospel.
