Living in the Shadow of the Cross

LIVING IN THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

Luke 18:31-43

Take Home

  • Outrageous suffering and a despicable death were his choice from eternity past.
  • The whole scandal would end with glory and great joy.
  • Despite knowing of that gloomy ending, Jesus went about dispensing healing and help.
  • He hears the voice in the crowd…yes, he can hear the smallest voice crying for help.

IMAGINE LIVING YOUR LIFE WITH FULL KNOWLEDGE OF A HORRIBLE EXECUTION WAITING AT THE END OF YOUR DAYS

  • We’ll head up to Jerusalem
  • Those long-ago prophets told my story in advance…and it is full nasty stuff for me.
  • Handed over to Gentiles,  I’ll be mocked, insulted, spat upon, flogged…and killed
  • The Good News?  I’ll be raised to life again!

LISTEN TO THE PROPHETS FORETELLING THE BAD NEWS/GOOD NEWS

  • David saw it coming (Psalm 22)
  • Jesus cry of despair…v 1
  • The mocking…vs 6,7
  • Bones out of joint…v 14
  • Intense thirst…v 15
  • Hands and feet pierced…v16No bones broken…v 17
  • Garments divided by casting lots…v 18

ISAIAH EXPLAINED THE ‘WHY’ OF SUCH DASTARDLY TREATMENT  (Chapter 53)

  • He took up OUR infirmities and carried OUR sorrows…v 4
  • Pierced for OUR transgressions and crushed for OUR iniquities…v 5
  • The punishment that brought US peace was upon him…v 5
  • By his wounds WE are healed…v 5
  • WE have gone astray…the Lord laid on him the iniquity of US All…V 6

EACH OF THE GOSPELS DETAILS THE HORRID FULFILLMENT OF THESE DARK WORDS

  • Matthew 27
  • Mark 14, 15
  • Luke 22, 23
  • John 19

DESPITE THAT CLOUD HANGING OVER JESUS’ HEAD…HIS FOCUS WAS ON OTHERS

  • The crowd surrounds Jesus as he travels along.
  • The blind beggar calls out: Jesus, Son of David…have mercy on me!
  • Told by people to be still, he shouted all the louder.
  • Jesus stopped when he heard that voice…and called for the man.
  • What do you want?   Sight.  You have it…now.

IN THE MIDST OF MY DARK MOMENTS…CAN I HEAR THE CRY OF OTHERS?

  • The muffled cry of the lonely ones
  • The growling stomachs of the poor
  • Single folk at ‘family’ events
  • The weeping of those with secret sin and shame
