Sermon Series-Fathering in the Age of Fatherlessness

Fathering: heeding the call to pursue the fatherless

 

1.     Fathering a communal calling (Dt 10:12-18)

a. a duty of the entire community of faith

b. reflects the God who set us free

c.  calls all members (women, singles and elderly too) to:

                    i. provide justice: Dt 24:17

                     ii. shape dignity: Dt 24:19-22

                    iii. model life in the new Kingdom (tithes/Firstfruits!): Dt 26:12

 

2.     Fathering a prophetic calling

a. Pairing “fatherless” with “aliens” and “widows” key

                     i. Church “saved so that…” (I Pe 2:11)

                     ii. Biblical target always greater than just church (I Pe 2:12)

                    iii. Mercy to the defenseless is compelling witness

b. Targeting this city: specific challenges, opportunities

                    i. Mentor fatherless in the city

                    ii. Must protect, encourage, support single moms

                     iii. Must surround strained marriages/homes with loving hope

                     iv. “Each one reach one”…for the sake of the Kingdom of God
