Introduction: can fathers be “the glory of their children” (Prov 17:6) in a fatherless age?

 

1. Fathers model the gospel as forgiven sons (Ro 8:12-17)

a. remembering our past as slaves (Ro 7!)

b. cherishing our status as sons (by adoption/by birth) (Jn 1:12-13)

c. trusting God for a future as heirs

1. despite suffering (17, 35)

2. confident hope (31-34)

 

2. Fathers model the gospel as forgivers, accepters, restorers (Lk 15:17-24)

a. when the prodigal returns: sin in the family

b. “on earth as it is in heaven”: responding like the Father
