Fruit of the Spirit 5 – Patience

God has called and equipped Christians to walk in patience, in all areas of our lives. One aspect of patience that we will look at is being slow to anger. When we are quick to anger, the Bible says that we let down our defenses and that we look foolish. We are to walk in patience with each other as well as with the world. Peter and Paul both tell us to specifically watch how we act when we're in front of people in the world so we won't give them an excuse to criticize Christianity.

Ga 5:22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
23 gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. (see Amplified)

As we walk in the fruit of the spirit, the law won't have anything wrong to point out in us. Outsiders will not have negative things to say about us. They'll have no cause for criticism when we actually walk in these fruit. These fruit are not just for us to walk in with each other, but for the world around us.
1Pe 2:12 Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe [them,] glorify God in the day of visitation.

Patience - KJV says longsuffering - patience sounds easier.
Dake's Study Bible defines it as "patient endurance; to bear long with the frailties, offences, injuries, and provocations of others, without murmuring, repining, or resentment."

Gal 5:22 Amplified 22 But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love, joy (gladness), peace, patience (an even temper, forbearance), kindness, goodness (benevolence), faithfulness,
23Gentleness (meekness, humility), self-control (self-restraint, continence). Against such things there is no law [that can bring a charge].

Some scriptures about being slow to anger.
Jas 1:19 [This] you know, my beloved brethren. But everyone must be quick to hear, slow to speak [and] slow to anger;
Pr 14:17 A quick-tempered man acts foolishly, And a man of evil devices is hated.
Pr 14:29 He who is slow to anger has great understanding, But he who is quick-tempered exalts folly.
Pr 15:18 A hot-tempered man stirs up strife, But the slow to anger calms a dispute.
Pr 16:32 He who is slow to anger is better than the mighty, And he who rules his spirit, than he who captures a city.
Pr 17:14 The beginning of strife is like letting out water, So abandon the quarrel before it breaks out.
Pr 19:11 A man's discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.
Pr 19:19 A man of great anger will bear the penalty, For if you rescue him, you will only have to do it again.
Pr 25:28 Like a city that is broken into and without walls Is a man who has no control over his spirit.
Ec 7:8 The end of a matter is better than its beginning; Patience of spirit is better than haughtiness of spirit.
Ec 7:9 Do not be eager in your heart to be angry, For anger resides in the bosom of fools.

Paul said that there are things we will have to endure. Whatever we endure will be nothing compared to the things that he endured for the Gospel.
2Co 6:2 for He says, "AT THE ACCEPTABLE TIME I LISTENED TO YOU, AND ON THE DAY OF SALVATION I HELPED YOU." Behold, now is "THE ACCEPTABLE TIME," behold, now is "THE DAY OF SALVATION"-
3 giving no cause for offense in anything, so that the ministry will not be discredited,
4 but in everything commending ourselves as servants of God, in much endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses,
5 in beatings, in imprisonments, in tumults, in labors, in sleeplessness, in hunger,
6 in purity, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in genuine love,

Eph 4:1 Therefore I, the prisoner of the Lord, implore you to walk in a manner worthy of the calling with which you have been called,
2 with all humility and gentleness, with patience, showing tolerance for one another in love,
3 being diligent to preserve the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

Col 1:9 For this reason also, since the day we heard [of it,] we have not ceased to pray for you and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding,
10 so that you will walk in a manner worthy of the Lord, to please Him in all respects, bearing fruit in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God;
11 strengthened with all power, according to His glorious might, for the attaining of all steadfastness and patience; joyously {with joy}
12 giving thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the saints in Light.

Col 3:12 So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience;
13 bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you.

2Ti 3:10 Now you followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, love, perseverance,

2Ti 4:2 preach the word; be ready in season [and] out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.
