Kingdom Practice: Jesus, the Crowd, and the Critics

Luke 19:28-48 In Jesus' day – as today! – there were conflicting opinions about God and His mission in Christ. Some in the crowd wanted to use Jesus for their own personal, spiritual purposes. Others didn't want Him at all and were actively trying to destroy all He is and stands for. But, as we watch how Jesus responded, we find a pattern for our behavior today, as we partner with Him to "seek and save the lost."

Kingdom Practice: A Kingdom Mission

Doctor Luke has so clearly laid out in chapter 18 the two options in trying to find acceptance before God. It's either a self-righteous performing or a desperate dependence. It is those who know how needy they are for the grace of God that He delights in and takes the initiative to save. Not only is this the posture of life in the kingdom, but this too is the mission of the Kingdom, desperate sinners who know they are glorying in a merciful Savior in front of other needy sinners.

Luke 18:31-43 Peter has just reminded Jesus that the disciples had left all to follow Him. Now Jesus states clearly that He is heading to the cross. But the disciples are blind to the reality of the Kingdom, and it will take the example of a lowly, blind beggar to clear things up.

Kingdom Posture: Persistent Prayer

Luke 18:1-8 Jesus has just reminded his disciples that there will be a period of time between his initiation of the kingdom and its glorious fulfillment (17:22-37). But the question that this forces upon the minds of all who follow Christ is this: How are we to live while waiting for his return? In chapter 18 Luke brings us Jesus' teaching on the posture we are to take as those who advance the kingdom in the midst of a broken world.

Kingdom Reality

Luke 17:11-21 Today we return to our study through Luke's biography of Jesus Christ. The story continues with Jesus still on His way to Jerusalem where the final confrontation will take place. Along the way, Jesus is teaching all who will listen about the invasion of heavenly power that will ultimately provide rescue and reformation for a sin-corrupted creation. Jesus calls this "the kingdom of God" and the next major section of Luke's Gospel is all about this amazing redemptive mission of God.

Looking Backward, Forward, and Upward

Selected Scriptures On this last Sunday of the year, we take an opportunity to reflect on what God, in His great faithfulness, has done in and through us this past year. But, as wonderful as the past may be, the future is where our energies must be focused as we look forward to the opportunities and challenges of 2008. And, in everything we understand that our primary focus must be on God Himself, the source of every good thing.
