A Time for Hope
Selected Scriptures On this first Sunday of Advent, we turn our eyes to the place hope has always played in the lives of those seeking the promise of Messiah. With far less evidence than is available to us, the Old Testament God-followers ordered their lives around God's promise to send the "He", the One who would one day rescue them from their bondage and brokenness. Imagine the doubts that would have arisen over the centuries! And then imagine the unparalleled joy at hearing John say "there He is, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world."

Gratitude Matters
Ephesians 5:15-21; Psalm 73 There are many definitions of worship, and there are many elements that go into worship. Today we focus on just one: gratitude. Paul calls us to the giving of thanks 24 times in his writings and always describes it as the constant attitude that must surround us at all times, in all situations. Without gratitude, our every act of worship is seen as hypocrisy, and our greatest acts of service as mere man pleasing. Gratitude matters!

Creation Matters
Romans 8:19-25; Selected Scriptures It may surprise you to know that, originally, the responsibility to take care of God's earth was not delegated to government or industry or the politicos. God asked Adam to care for His creation, setting the standard for all humanity to take the mantle of stewardship in regard to the air, water, plants, animals, metals, minerals, and everything else God had created and declared to be "good." The question that God presents to every generation is simply this: How are you caring for my creation?

Church Matters
Ephesians 1:22,23; Hebrews 10:19-25 In the past few years, popular writers have increasingly suggested that the church has no future. Statements like "you'll have to leave the church to be the church" abound. And while it is foolish to suggest that the church today is without blemish, it is also fair to assert that where the church is the church, it remains the primary vehicle through which Christ is working out His kingdom mission of rescue and reformation. With all its problems, the church matters.

Beauty Matters
Psalm 104; Acts 14:14-17; 1 Timothy 6:17 As Christ-followers, we are pretty good at encouraging one another to persevere through tough times, and to rest in God despite the challenges of our sin-drenched, broken world. But what are we to think about all the good and pleasurable things this world offers? How do we explain the presence of beauty in a broken world? And even more, are we allowed to enjoy it? And if so, how do we avoid the risks associated with all that brings pleasure to our lives?

History Matters
Psalm 100 In our day, many are declaring that those who came before us couldn't have understood the challenges we face and therefore, history – while at times quaint and fun to remember – need not take up much of our time. But the Bible is history! In fact, our faith is grounded in the historical promises and actions of God Himself, most notably the entrance of God's Son into human history as Jesus Christ. It is still true that those who neglect history will find themselves ill prepared to makes sense out of the present. To those who follow Christ, history matters!

Health Matters: The Health of Body and Soul
1 Corinthians 6:9-20; Proverbs 4:20-23 What does God think of the way we use and care for the physical bodies He gave us? Does it matter how we eat, and if we exercise? Does God care about our sleep? And if He does, how does that fit into His concerns for the health of our souls? As we think more and more about what it means to "live" out the Gospel before a watching world, these are questions that first require biblical answers, and then, courageous obedience.

Home Matters: Fear of the Lord in the Home
Joshua 24:14-15 Does the Lord really care if my house is clean? Does He really care about the influences I allow to surround my children? Do family standards about finances and entertainment really matter? And does God really care about how I dress? The real question is this: Does the Lordship of Christ over my life exclude certain areas? The answer is simple: When Jesus said “Follow Me†He meant that every area of our lives are to be joyfully submitted to His Lordship, and aligned with His will. And everything means everything.

Marriage Matters: Why God's Design Accomplishes God's Purposes
Genesis 1, 2 Does marriage really matter? God says "yes, because I designed it to accomplish the very purposes I intend to accomplish through humanity in My world. But even more, I have intended that through the unique 'oneness' of marriage, the unique 'oneness' of the Godhead will be both portrayed and praised.†Marriage matters to God, and His design needs no editing.
