How You Listen

When someone is called “a good listener” it is high praise, however that is because it is a rare trait in our world. Most people do not like to listen, most of the time they are focused on what they have to say. The consequences of this is that often times we miss the point that the other speaker is saying. We never fully understand what they are saying. Today takes us through what it means to truly listen. As Christians we must learn and be ready to listen. We must be attentive and open to hear what God has to say in our lives.

Cultivated Hearts

In our modern world we have a tendency to desire immediate results. From checking the mirror directly after a work out, to daily checking on our investments, hoping for some kind overnight miracle. We want it now, not later. We do not usually want to just put our heads down and continue the work. However, as Christians that’s often exactly what need to do. This morning Terry takes us through a closer look at Luke 8:15. We as Christians must work day in and day out to cultivate our hearts. We must listen, retain, and persevere regularly, then we can bear fruit for the Kingdom of God.

Think This Through

Why Parables? Well, Jesus might say “because I want people to listen, to see, and to think.” The Bible is often thought of by the faithful as an instruction manual or rule book, and that, Terry says, carries over into the parables of Jesus too. The problem is, none of that is an accurate description of the parables let alone the Scriptures as a whole. The parables and this Sower parable specifically are offered to give us the opportunity to consider the Kingdom of God, and to Think This Through. It’s time to be reintroduced to the true meaning of the Sower.

The Parable of the Good Soil, and the Other Soils

In our day and age we like to break everything down to a checklist of sorts. We try to simplify each part to its simplest form. However, that is not always easy to do. Sometimes there isn’t a checklist and we end up over complicating the very task we are trying to accomplish. We actually it make harder on ourselves. Today, Terry takes us through a different take on The Parable in Luke 8. As Christians we need to be open, willing and accepting of the Gospel of Jesus. We need to retain it and hold on to it. We must keep seeking Jesus and tune out the distractions of the world. There is no go and do, there is only think this through.

What is Shaping Who?

Change can be difficult, and it is often something we aim to avoid. The way we perceive things has a tendency to shape our outlook, and if things do not fit the perceptions we have, we try to reshape them to what we think they should be. This can be met with varying forms of success or absolute failure. All of this to avoid change. In our misunderstanding we even try and reshape the Kingdom of God, to match the Kingdoms of the world. However we cannot shape the Kingdom of God. Tonight Terry takes us through a different take on Luke Chapter 8. When we try and shape the Kingdom of God to fit our own perceptions, we tend to miss the point of what God is actually doing. We miss the change that God has for us.
