You Do Not Have To Be An Example

If there is anything that makes us squirm, it is the Bibles admonition to be examples. Very few of us are comfortable with that because we have so many human failings. Many times, we can get by very well without being examples, but there is one place where we cannot. We are examples to our children whether we want to be or not. If you have failed in this, fear not. The Bible offers hope. Key Verses:1Tim 4:12, Titus 2:7, 1Cor 11:1, Matt 5:48, Php 3:10-14, John 15:1-4, 2Cor 7: 6-11

Getting People to Take Their Medicine

It has been said that the church is to be a hospital for sinners, not a museum for saints. If the church is a hospital, what kind of medicine does it offer and how can it persuade patients to take it? Just as in every area of life, Jesus is our example here. He excelled in getting people to hear and accept what God had to say to them. He led many people to complete change and healing. What was his secret weapon? Key Verses: Lk 5:27-32, Matt 28:18, Lk 7:36-39, Matt 19:16-22, Eph 2:8-12, John 16:7-14, Lk 19:1ff, 1John 4:8

The Purpose of Suffering

It is Gods will to shape us into the image of His son, Jesus Christ. But, how does he accomplish this? James tells us that it begins with the testing of our faith, leads us towards patience, and ultimately brings us to maturity. There are many reasons that we resist such tests and trials, but the bottom line is this: trials are the very things God uses to mold us into the image of Christ—and there is no shortcut. Key Verses: Rom 8:28-29, Php 2:1-8, James 1:2-4, Php 4:11-13, 2Cor 11:23ff, 2Tim 4:6-8

Gods Greatest Work

In church we hear stories of great miracles and are often even taught that we should expect them. Then, we are disillusioned when they fail to appear. Why the great disconnect between what we expect and what really happens? Could it be that we have not dared to acknowledge the truth? That is, that God more often works through suffering than through triumph. Key Verses: Daniel 3, Mark 14:32-42, Mark 15:22-39, 2Cor 12:7-10, 2Cor 4:7-12, 1Peter 4:12-19

Am I Right About This?

God’s word says that His ways are not our ways. This is a truth that we all acknowledge, yet somehow fail to put into practice. The result is a way of living and doing that feels right, but is often far outside of God’s will. Unfortunately, we are absolutely blind to this until we get ourselves alone with God. Only in His presence do we learn how close or how far from the truth we are living. We must go there. Key Verses:Matt 5:21-24, 18:15-17, 18:21-35, 6:14-15, 1Cor 6:1-7

That Lying Devil

There are many people enslaved by urges, habits, and sins that they seem powerless to overcome. Many have in fact given up. The good news is that there is hope for even the most seriously bound, but we must learn to recognize the enemy’s tactics. Too often we do not begin to fight until the battle is over. Discover how to engage Satan much earlier and much more effectively. Key Versus: Rom 7:15-17, Gen 2:16-17, Gen 3, John 8:44, John 8:31, Eph 6:11, 1Cor 6:18-20, 1Cor 15:33

That Scheming Devil

Far from being a mythological figure, Satan is a spirit being actively seeking to destroy us. Failing to appreciate this truth places us at serious risk. Find out whether or not Satan is at work in your life and exactly what he hopes to accomplish. The answers might surprise you. Key Verses: 1Pet 5:8, 2Cor 2:11, Prov 7:6ff, John 15:1-6, 1John 1:8-9, Rom 8:35-39, Eze 37

Its Perfectly Ridiculous

Of all the holidays people celebrate, Easter must surely be one of the strangest. Consider what we are celebrating-a man being raised from the dead. Historically, this has been hard for many people to accept. But, the evidence is there. The power of God not only raised Jesus Christ from the dead, but by that same power has brought many others from death to life. Key Verses: 1Cor 15:1-8, Acts 17:23-34, Acts 26:6-24, Mat 27:62-66, John 11:17ff, Lk 17:11-17, Mk 5, 1Cor 3:4-7

The Narrow Path

Why is the path narrow and which path is the right path? The answer may surprise you. Key Verses: John 10:10, Mat 7:13-23, Lk 18:10ff, Lk 15:11ff, Acts 20:18-24, Heb 11:7-12, Col 2:13-23, Heb 11:6

A Prison of Our Own Making

Anger is our body's God given response to perceived threats. God placed it there to alert us to a potential problem and to give us the energy to deal with that problem. The problem is that we sometimes vent our anger on innocent bystanders, or internalize it so that it consumes our thoughts. When this happens, we are in a prison of our own making. There is a way to freedom. Key Passages: Matt 18:15ff, Matt 18:21ff, Eph 4:26
