Describing God

Who is God?

The Bible describes God in very personal terms.

  • Genesis 1, 2, 3
    Intelligent Creator,

How’s a camel going to get across the desert?

Where’s a kangaroo going to hold her baby?

Loving Provider,

Merciful Judge

  • Exodus 20:4-6
    Jealous, punishing, loving

When God spoke the Ten Commandments to the Israelites:

COMMANDMENT #2

4 "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. Exodus 20:4-6 (NIV)

  • **2 Peter 3:9
    Patient, not slow

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 10 But the day of the Lord will come like a thief… 2 Peter 3:9-10 (NIV)

What is God?

  • Omnipresent
  • Omniscient
  • Omnipotent

If I described my wife…

It’s not enough to know about God.

God wants us to know Him.

God wants a relationship with us. God is our Father.

  • Romans 9:26

and, "It will happen that in the very place where it was said to them, 'You are not my people,' they will be called 'sons of the living God.'" Romans 9:26 (NIV)

  • 2 Corinthians 6:18

"And I will be a father to you, And you shall be sons and daughters to Me," Says the Lord Almighty. 2 Corinthians 6:18 (NASB)

  • 1 John 3:1

How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 1 John 3:1 (NIV)

The Bible explains God’s relationship with us in stories.

**2 Peter 1:16-18
