Nehemiah (#13): A People on Mission

The city has been rebuilt, the people have begun to turn their hearts back to God, and spiritual renewal has swept across the community. Now, in Nehemiah 11:1-36, we read about the practicality of life and how the people gave thought to where they would live. The lesson for us today is simple. God forms a people in order to put them on a mission. Too often in American Christian culture, the gospel is presented as a sort of cul-de-sac religion. God saves you so you can have a better life. But salvation was never meant to terminate on the individual. God saves us so that we can join together with the body of Christ in the form of a local church and be on mission for Jesus.

Nehemiah (#12): Lives of Obligation

In Nehemiah 10:1-39 we see the response of life change to the repentance of Nehemiah 9. Where there is true repentance, there will always be some measure of change. Such was the case here. As we read this chapter, we see a picture of a people who made a decision to live in covenant obligation with one another. In our modern culture of rugged individualism and self-absorption, there are many lessons we can learn about living lives of obligation.

Nehemiah (#11): Confession & Covenant

The scene in Nehemiah 9:1-38 is an incredible one. Once again the people are moved to heartfelt repentance and confession for how far they have fallen away from God and His ways. In the prayer that makes up most of this chapter, we listen to a broken people confessing their sins and recommitting themselves to God. This story of chronic rebellion on the part of the people and consistent faithfulness on the part of God is not just Israel's story. It is our story as well.

But God...

Taking a break out of our Nehemiah series, we pause on this water baptism Sunday to remind ourselves of the Good News of the Gospel. In Ephesians 2:1-10, we find one of the clearest and most thorough explanations of what God did for us in Christ.

Nehemiah (#10) Repentance and Rejoicing

The wall has been rebuilt, and the people are occupying the city, but the mission is not finished. More than just merely a physical city, God’s desire for Jerusalem was for it to be a spiritual city, where all the nations could come to Him. To that end, we see a shift in Nehemiah 8 as the mission moves from the external wall to the interior hearts of the people.

Nehemiah (#9): Ministry, Money & the Resurrection

In this message we look at the issue of money, ministry and giving. The New Testament calls us to a life of continual generosity, but not so that we meet some standard or fulfill a law, but rather as our joyful response to the Resurrection and Gospel of Jesus.

Come to the Table

In this message Don McKelvey compares the story of King David extending an invitation to Mephibosheth to dine at his table as it relates to God extending the ultimate invitation through His son Jesus Christ.

Nehemiah (#8): Life as a Tribe

Nehemiah 7, like Nehemiah 3, is mostly another long list of people. In this message we use this as an opportunity to consider again the mission and vision of CrossPointe. This vision is guided by three essential questions that every church and Christian must answer.

Nehemiah (#7): Deceptive Distractions

After handling an internal struggle in the last chapter, our main man Nehemiah must once again battle against an external enemy bent on his destruction. This time though, their tactics have changed. Instead of obvious and outright opposition, they resort to deception and try to trick Nehemiah into diverting his attention. As we study Nehemiah 6, there is much to learn from Nehemiah's wisdom and how he handled the deceptive distractions to his mission.

Nehemiah (#6) : One Another

Up to this point in Nehemiah, the challenges faced have been external. But in Nehemiah 5:1-19 we read about internal strife amongst the people. The lesson for us today is clear. Our greatest challenges as a church lie within our four walls. Will we be people that live out the "one another" commands of the Scriptures and thus give Jesus much glory, or will we be dominated by self-absorption and petty insecurities?
