Serve Somebody: Adoring

The gospel of Mark portrays Jesus as a Servant on the move. Using the word “immediately” over 40 times, he shows Jesus ministering. Obedient to the Father’s will, Jesus preaches the good news, heals the sick, teaches his followers, and performs miracles. All the while, he heads toward his sacrificial death on the cross. Mark 10:45 sums up his mission: “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many.” Mark’s gospel reveals Jesus to be the perfect Servant and the perfect Sacrifice. Those who receive him as the good news, are empowered to serve in his name.

Serve Somebody: Authority Challenged, Authority Confirmed

As Jesus is days away from being nailed to the cross, he is continually being barraged with questions from the religious leaders about his authority as God’s Son. Jesus refutes each question which demonstrates his wisdom and power and the crowds become even more amazed and awestruck by the Messiah. As Jesus continued to challenge “religion” in his last days of public ministry, we are able to recognize that he is the true God-Man who has come to reconcile man to God.

A Church Moved by the Holy Spirit

It is often stated that the book of Acts, or the Acts of the Apostles, would be more accurately titled the Acts of the Holy Spirit. It is the Holy Spirit who moves in the hearts of believers to fulfill the work of the great commission. In Luke 24:49 Jesus tells His disciples that He was going to send them to the nations but that they needed to wait in the city until they were “clothed with power from on high,” or received and filled with the Holy Spirit. Then they would go to the nations starting in Jerusalem and going even to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). In Acts 13 and 14 the Holy Spirit speaks to the Church at Antioch, as they were worshipping and fasting, the Holy Spirit calls out and sends Paul and Barnabas on their first missionary journey (Acts 13:2). Filled with the Holy Spirit, Paul and Barnabas proclaim the gospel and plant churches in the region of Galatia (Antioch Pisidia, Iconium, Lystra and Derby).
