A Love That Lasts

A Love That Lasts
1 Corinthians 13:8-13
Pastor Jeramy Clark

(For Scripture references and fill-in the blanks)

I got a Walgreens kinda love for you . . .
yards and yards of greeting cards
full of sticky sappy oooze
I got a cheap and chintzy love for you
I’m pouring out this heart of mine
All for a dollar ninety-nine.

I gotta Walgreens kinda love.
heart shaped boxes, cheap balloons
and last year’s discount romance tunes
all piled-up high in my shopping cart
from the Walgreens in my heart

I gotta Walgreens kinda love for you.
a teddy bear from bottom shelf
and sweet perfume to please myself
and pink-red wrappings, don’t forget!
and, oh, why not, a Chia-Pet!

I gotta Walgreens kinda love, it’s true . . .
A Walgreens kinda love, for you.

KEY DEFINITION: God’s kind of love is self-sacrificial and unconditional.

THREE CONTRASTS:

1. Gifts are temporal; love is eternal. (13:8)

KEY CHALLENGE: Live life and love with eternity in mind.

2. Gifts are partial; love is complete. (13:9-10; 1 Corinthians 8:2, Philippians 3:12)

“Anyone who claims to know all the answers doesn’t really know very much.” 1 Corinthians 8:2, NLT

“Not that I have already obtained it or have already become perfect, but I press on so that I may lay hold of that for which also I was laid hold of by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:12

KEY INSIGHT: As we know Christ better we love better.

3. Gifts are elementary; love is mature. (13:11-12; 1 Corinthians 14:20, 2 Peter 3:18, Hebrews 5:13-14)

“Brothers and sisters, stop thinking like children. In regard to evil be infants, but in your thinking be adults.” 1 Corinthians 14:20, NIV

“Grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.” 2 Peter 3:18

“Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” Hebrews 5:13-14, NIV

THE GOAL: Grow up!

One of the best wedding gifts God gave you was a full-length mirror called your spouse. Had there been a card attached, it would have said, “Here's to helping you discover what you're really like!” ─ Gary and Betsy Ricucci

FINAL CHALLENGE: Pursue love because love has no end. (13:13)

I gotta Walgreens kinda love, it’s true . . .
A Walgreens kinda love, for you.

But a Walgreens love, though cheap and fast
Is a love that fades . . . it will not last.
The candy melts in sticky sweet,
Balloons will sink down to your feet
And burst.

What’s worse,
The perfume fades, the fire dies,
Red wrapping, just a cheap disguise
To hide a sugar-coated heart.

And sappy greeting cards can’t start
To speak of love alive and true.
So goes my Walgreen’s love for you.

I know a Lover who to Walgreens never went.
You’d be amazed how much He spent.

He loves good candy, hearts and bows,
But gives a love that trusts and knows
And stops
And sits
And shares
And waits.
This Lover never hesitates.

Some may want red cellophane
But I’ll take love that feels my pain
With crimson blood that trickles down
There were no ribbons on His crown.

While flowers fade and words grow old
He loves relentless, wild, and bold.
So intimate, He knows your name,

And puts cheap
Walgreens
love
to
shame.
