Laodicea - is it the best of the churches or the worst? Is it the one that most closely represents our churches? By the 1st Century, Laodicea was a very wealthy city. So wealthy that when the major earthquake struck it was the only city in the region that didn't ask for government help. They were self-sufficient and proud of it. However, their water was piped several kilometers and was both warm and mineral laden by the time it arrived in the city - it would make you sick if you drank it straight away. God invites the Laodiceans to see themselves in this picture. Their self-sufficiency belief was what led Jesus to tell the Laodiceans that they made Him sick.
