It's Time to Build

There are times when we neglect building the house that is our faith, or build it with less than prime materials. When the people of Israel returned from Babylon part of what they started to do was build the temple. Opposition from the nations around Israel (Ezra 4:1-5) and a letter from Artaxerxes (Ezra 4:23, 24) discouraged them and caused them to quit. Now 16 years had passed, Artaxerxes had been dead a year and they had not returned to building the temple. Through Haggai God tells the people that it’s time to stop making excuses and build the temple. I. The people made excuses for not building the temple A. It’s not the right time (Haggai 1:2) 1. They used the opposition they faced to say it wasn’t God’s time 2. They found time to build their own houses (Haggai 1:4, 5) 3. Their priorities were off – building own houses but not temple B. We are the dwelling place of God 1. As a Church (Ephesians 2:19-22) a. Do we say maybe it’s not God’s time because it is hard? b. Are we busy with things that have no eternal consequence? 2. As individuals (I Corinthians 3:16, 17) a. Do we say that it’s too hard so maybe it’s not God’s time? b. Are we busy with things that don’t matter and neglect the spiritual? II. Their disregard for building the temple was costing them A. They worked hard but it wasn’t yielding enough 1. Not enough food and water (Haggai 1:6) 2. Not enough clothes and wages 3. Consider your ways (Haggai 1:7) B. Missing out on all they could have 1. God was withholding blessing (Haggai 1:9-11) 2. They weren’t building the temple 3. They were taking care of their own houses C. We work hard for food and clothing and wages investing all that time, care and worry 1. We never are satisfied - God is trying to get our attention (Haggai 2:15-17) 2. Joy comes when we invest in our spiritual house III. Building a spiritual house A. The foundation of the house is Jesus (I Corinthians 3:11-15) B. How do we build on that? 1. First, are we building at all? 2. Are we building with materials that will withstand judgment and endure to eternity? a) Correct motives b) With maximum effort and commitment c) Using natural abilities alone, or by faith humbly using your spiritual gifts We need to build on the foundation that was laid in our lives by what Jesus did. If we want to grow and be fully blessed by God we need to build our spiritual buildings and build them with lasting materials on the foundation provided to us by Jesus.
