Jesus and the Church

When we began to work our way through the book of Revelation I talked about how we were going to learn more about Jesus through this letter penned by John the Apostle. So I want to pause here at the end of John’s first vision and summarize what we have learned about the work of Jesus that is going on right now in the Church. We know from chapter 1 that Jesus is in the midst of the Church tending to its needs and that He upholds the messengers to the Church in His right hand. What else do we learn from the messages to the Church about what Jesus knows and does? I. Jesus knows about what we are going through A. He knows our work and labor, love, faith and patience (Rev. 2:2, 19, 3:1, 8, 15) 1. The work of the Church is worship (Heb. 10:25, Eph. 5:18, 19) 2. The work of the Church is evangelism (Matthew 28:19, 20) 3. The work of the Church is discipleship B. He knows of our tribulation and poverty (Rev. 2:9) 1. He said we would have trouble (John 16:33) 2. He said that people would despise us Matt. 10:22, John 15:18) 3. People of faith suffer (Hebrews 11:35-38) C. He knows where we dwell (Rev. 2:13) 1. He knows the government we are under (Romans 13:1) 2. He knows the temptation we are under (Hebrews 4:15) II. Jesus sets the standard for us A. Jesus is the church’s authority – (Rev. 2:1) B. He is God – the First and the Last (Revelation 2:8) C. He has the word of God (Revelation 2:12) D. He is holy and true (Revelation 3:7) E. He is the Amen, the Faithful and True Witness, our Creator (Revelation 3:14) III. Jesus is our Judge and Great Rewarder A. He is our Judge 1. The Judge of our heart and paths (Rev. 2:18) 2. He will remove a Church that has fallen (Rev. 2:5) 3. He will fight against those who preach false doctrine in the Church (Rev. 2:16) 4. He will discipline and even kill those who lead others astray (Rev. 2:22, 23) 5. As many as he loves He rebukes and chastens (Revelation 3:19) B. He is our Great Rewarder 1. He will give us the Paradise of God where we will eat from the Tree of Life (Rev. 2:7) 2. We will not be hurt by the second death (Rev. 2:11) 3. Give spiritual bread, invitation to the winners celebration a new name (Rev. 2:17) 4. We will reign with Jesus (Revelation 2:26) 5. We will walk in white. He will confess our name before Father and angels (Rev. 3:5) 6. Keep us from the tribulation. We will be established in God’s presence (Rev. 3:10, 12) What is revealed about Jesus in the messages to seven churches should be comforting and challenging to us all at the same time. Comforting because Jesus knows what is going on in our lives and He is with us and promises that through Him we can and will overcome; challenging, because we have a perfect standard to hit; challenging because we need to hold to His standard because He is our Authority, Judge and Rewarder. Comforting because if we do live faithfully (thereby proving the genuineness of our faith), we will live with Him and enjoy the treasure that we have laid up in heaven.
