Life Before the Resurrection

Last week we read about the great judgement that began to fall on the earth as Jesus opened the first four seals of the scroll. We read of bloodless conquest, war, famine, death and pestilence that will bring about the death a fourth of the earth. When the fifth seal is opened, John is shown a scene in heaven that will give us insight into the Christians state before the resurrection, the prayers of the martyrs and the comfort of Jesus towards them. I. First, let’s talk about who these martyrs aren’t - The rapture A. We will be caught up to be with the Lord (I Thessalonians 4:15b-18) 1. The dead in Christ will rise first 2. Those who are alive will be caught up to meet Him there 3. They will stay with Him B. We will not all sleep but we will be changed (I Cor. 15:51-53) 1. We won’t all die before we are all changed 2. In the blink of an eye we will be made incorruptible and immortal C. Where are we going after the rapture? (John 14:2-4) 1. He has prepared a place for us 2. He will receive us to Himself D. When? 1. Jesus promised the church in Philadelphia (Revelation 3:10) 2. Jesus warned in His teaching be ready, there’s no way to know when 3. NT writers say repeatedly be ready He is returning and no one knows the time II. These are martyrs from the early part of the tribulation after the rapture A. Where are they and how are they described? (Revelation 6:9) 1. They are under the altar 2. They are souls a. Slain for the word of God b. Slain for the testimony they held B. They are praying for the kingdom to come (Rev, 6:10, Matt. 6:10, Rev. 22:20) 1. For God’s judgment to fall and for justice to be done 2. Is it right for evil to win and for wrong to prevail? 3. Is it right for evil people to malign and kill the righteous? It all must come to an end III. What does Jesus do for them until the time they receive their resurrection body A. He gives them each a white robe (Revelation 6:11) B. He tells them to rest C. There is more that must happen before the end 1. There are more that will be martyred – There is a final number God knows 2. Described as brothers and fellow servants. What does this teach us about the state of a Christian before the rapture/resurrection? We will be with Him clothed in white, praying for His return, praising and serving Him as we’ll see in chapter 7. What does this teach us about the longing of every believer’s heart before and after death? We long for His kingdom to come and for justice to be done. What does this teach us about Jesus? He comforts, clothes and give rest to these saints who died for their faith. He knows the number of those who will be martyred.
