What is True Success? - 1 Samuel 13:23-14:52

1 Samuel 14 our author reveals true success, or lack thereof, by contrasting the lives of a father and son. By observing Saul and Jonathan we’ll see how the Bible defines true success. 1. Jonathan attacks the Philistine garrison (13:23-14:15). 2. Saul and the Israelites finish off the Philistines (14:16-23). 3. Saul issues a foolish ban against eating (14:24-46).

Costly Consequences - 1 Samuel 13:1-22

1 Samuel 13 begins a new section in 1 Samuel that carries through Chapter 15. The purpose of these chapters is to document the deterioration of Saul’s reign and Yahweh’s rejection of him as Israel’s king. The dominant feeling in this section is not success, but failure. Of course, when it comes to leadership, we frequently learn more from a leader’s failures than his or her successes. Chapter 13 divides into three scenes: 13:1-7 and 13:16-22 are pressure notes on the conflict with the Philistines. These two sections provide a narrative framework for the middle section of 13:8-15, which articulates a stunning theological verdict on Saul. 1. Saul is threatened by the Philistines (13:1-7). 2. Saul is rejected by God (13:8-15).

Failure Doesn't Have to Be Final - 1 Samuel 11:14-12:25

In 1 Samuel 11:14-12:25 we will see the present obedience can outweigh past transgressions. 1. Samuel vindicates himself as judge (11:14-12:5). 2. Samuel vindicates Yahweh as King (12:6-15). 3. Samuel calls Israel to commitment (12:16-25).

The People's Choice - 1 Samuel 9:1-11:13

As a result of his declining years and rebellious sons, the great Samuel was ousted by his own people. Before Israel gave Samuel his walking papers, they demanded that he find them a king. Samuel immediately sought God’s perspective on this matter. Yahweh surprised Samuel by telling him to give the people exactly what they wanted. Samuel then began seeking God for His kingly selection. This is where my master Saul and I enter the story. 1. The selection of Saul (9:1-10:16). 2. The public announcement of Saul (10:17-27). The divine confirmation of Saul (11:1-13).
