Facing Your Giant - 1 Samuel 17:1-54

Giants can only be defeated if we face them head on. Thus, the question that we’ll consider is: How can we defeat our giants? In the familiar story of David and Goliath we find an answer that is as relevant today as it was 3,000 years ago. 1. Israel encounters a seemingly impossible situation (17:1-11). 2. David volunteers for a seemingly impossible situation (17:12-30). 3. David conquers Goliath and vindicates God’s honor (17:31-54).

The Heart of the Matter - 1 Samuel 16:1-23

The theme of 1 Samuel 16 is that God has superior eyesight. He is not limited to physical 20/20 vision, which can hinder one from seeing reality. It is very difficult to see things the way God sees things. He sees all things and all people in the true light of His own will and purposes. The whole world looks very different from that perspective. Therefore, it is critical to see as God sees. 1. God chooses David (16:1-13). 2. Saul chooses David (16:14-23).

Partial Obedience Is Disobendience - 1 Samuel 15:1-35

Families don’t listen to one another like they should. Friends don’t listen to one another like they should. Employees don’t listen to employers like they should. Students don’t listen to teachers like they should. Humanity suffers with a selective hearing problem. This problem is thousands of years old. King Saul exhibited this problem in 1 Samuel 15. Yet, this chapter is clear that leaders are called to listen. 1. Saul defeats (partially) the Amalekites (15:1-9). 2. Samuel confronts and condemns Saul (15:10-31). Samuel separates from Saul (15:32-35).

What is True Success? - 1 Samuel 13:23-14:52

1 Samuel 14 our author reveals true success, or lack thereof, by contrasting the lives of a father and son. By observing Saul and Jonathan we’ll see how the Bible defines true success. 1. Jonathan attacks the Philistine garrison (13:23-14:15). 2. Saul and the Israelites finish off the Philistines (14:16-23). 3. Saul issues a foolish ban against eating (14:24-46).
