Don't Mess with God - 1 Samuel 5:1-12

"Don't Mess with God"? I don't know about you, but I am consistently grieved by my unwillingness to take God seriously. There are times in my personal life and church ministry when I question my own zeal and devotion toward God. How is it that I can know God in an intimate and meaningful way and yet, at times, live like a Christian agnostic? Perhaps you have also wrestled with how carelessly you respond to God. Maybe you, too, are grieved by the things that you think, say, and do. If so, 1 Samuel 5 is a story that will get your attention and hit you between the eyes. 1. God obliterates His supposed competition (5:1-5). 2. God judges His enemies with tumors (5:6-12).

Gone with the Glory - 1 Samuel 4:1b-22

Many Christians have a Lucky Charms approach to the Bible. They like the taste of the marshmallows, but they aren't particularly big on the cereal itself. They pick and choose certain soft and taste verses that tantalize their taste buds. If something doesn't appeal to them in their study of God's Word, they quickly disregard it. To make matters worse, some Christians use Bible verses, relics, and traditions as lucky charms to please, appease, and influence God. The author of 1 Samuel 4 warns against such practices. 1. Tragic consequences result when we fail to consult God (4:1b-11). 2. Tragic consequences result when we fail to repent from sin (4:12-22).

When God Speaks - 1 Samuel 3:1-4:1a

The overarching theme of 1 Samuel 3:1-4:1a is: When God speaks, we should listen. 1. God's Word comes to those who listen (3:1-14). 2. God's Word comes in power and wins the day (3:15-4:1a).

A Tale of Two Families - 1 Samuel 2:11-36

First Samuel 2:11-36 is one of the original family reality shows. In this narrative the lives of two families are contrasted and weaved together like a fast-paced reality show. This text answers the question: What happens when we fail to honor God as we should? The answer is sobering, yet throughout this story there is plenty of encouragement for individuals and families who are seeking to honor the Lord. The point is: What goes around comes around. 1. Family contrasts in worship (2:11-17). 2. Family contrasts in morality (2:18-26). 3. Family contrasts in judgment (2:27-36).

A Gift Exchange - 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11

In 1 Samuel 1:1-2:11 the narrator pens a story filled with hurts and obstacles. Despite disappointment and pain, God yearns for you and me to worship Him. This passage poses two critical questions: 1. What is true worship? (1:1-28) 2. Why is true worship important? (2:1-11)
