The End of the Spear - 1 Samuel 26:1-25

In 1 Samuel 26, David has a case of dajavu (lit., “already seen”). Chapter 26 is so similar to Chapter 24 that some scholars draw the conclusion that these accounts are one and the same. However, there are too many differences to adopt this view. Instead, Chapter 26 is more like retaking a test in school. If you fail a particular test or want to improve your grade, your teacher may allow you to retake the test. Similarly, when we fail a spiritual test or need to improve our response, God often allows us to retake or repeat the same basic test. I think the reason we find a second incident in Chapter 26 so similar to the one described in Chapter 24 is because God wanted David to retake the same test in order to receive a higher score. 1. David spares Saul’s life…again (26:1-12). 2. David calls out his enemies…again (26:13-25).
