  Please Respect Me!

PHILIPPIANS 2:1-11

JUNE 15, 2008

There is a lack of civility in our society. Disrespect is on the rise. Alarm bells are going off because we no longer have respect for one another. People are physically and verbally rude.

Four clues for living a life of respect …

1. Being like-minded, having the same love (v. 2a)

2. Being one in spirit and purpose (v. 2b)

3. In humility consider others better than yourselves (v.3)

4. Look … to the interests of others (v. 4)

Life Lessons

·      The heart of the issue is always A______________.

1. I must let go of S__________ and E______________ Christ Jesus.

Two assertions about Jesus:

·      He was "in very nature God" (Philippians 2:6)

·      “And He did not regard his existing in a manner of "equality with God" as a prize "to be grasped" (Philippians 2:6)

The attitude of Jesus was, "Others come first."

2. I will C_____________ more about the needs of O__________ than my own needs.

A servant says, "I will do whatever I can, whenever I can, to help whoever I can."

3.  I will practice H_____________ even though it may C________________ me. (V. 8)

“Humility does not mean thinking less of yourself than of other people, nor does it mean having a low opinion of your own gifts.  It means freedom from thinking about yourself one way or the other at all.”     William Temple

Action Steps

How will your life be different this week?

  • Write down one concrete action you can take this week to have the attitude of Christ.
  • What prideful attitude do you need to surrender?
  • What one thing can you do to serve your family, your neighbors, and your coworkers?
  • If you do not know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior, would you like to commit your life to Him right now?

Live in the shadow of our Lord Jesus, who lived a humble, serving life.
