Two To One: Two Becoming One Flesh (1)

In Genesis, the Bible clearly states that in marriage, two shall become one. This is not always as easy as it sounds. Male and female together Should reflect the image of God. This was God's plan in creating them, male and female. God created them to be equal, but different, and to be partners. Male and female brains are built differently and work differently. This difference can create conflict. Session 1 explores these differences so we can better understand each other, avoid conflict when possible and better deal with conflict when it does happen. We also explore seven of the most common areas of conflict and five myths about marriage.

Jacob Wrestles With God

After wrestling with a man, who turned out to be God, Jacob has his hip put out of socket, his name changed and was blessed by God. Years before this, Jacob had run away after stealing Esau's birthright. Now he is on his way back home, knowing he will soon see Esau. This night Jacob's mind is very troubled. This night, Jacob wrestles with God. When God took his physical strength away by putting his hip out of joint, Jacob knew he would have to rely completely on God when he met Esau. God went before Jacob and gave Esau a forgiving heart. We can do nothing in our own strength. We are called to let the the spirit of God work through us. We will be blessed when we become broken before God. In our broken state, we can still ask God to bless us. Jacob, after wrestling with God, asked God for a blessing, and he received it.

The Pool of Bethesda

Jesus went to the Pool of Bethesda. A multitude of invalids were there hoping to be healed. One man, who was lame, had been coming to the pool for 38 years, each day hoping that he would be healed. Why did Jesus heal this man and no one else? This man, knowing he was unable to fix his problem on his own, looked to Jesus. Jesus healed him. Do we need something from God today, something that is beyond our ability to fix, something that we've been struggling with for a long time? Are we willing to try something new? Will we look to Jesus?

More Than A Carpenter: Science and New Atheism (4)

The fourth sermon in this series can be used to combat some of the criticisms of Christianity. It will also explore the questions around science and new atheism. Can Christ be proven scientifically? Do faith and science disagree? Is science a legitimate reason to disbelieve in God? Currently, it's "en vogue" to claim to be an atheist. Many people think it makes them appear more intellectual. It has also become very common for Christians to be ridiculed for their beliefs. We learn in this sermon that faith and science do not disagree. Rather, they are in harmony. This sermon presents overwhelming evidence for us to be confident in our belief in Jesus Christ and the God of the Bible.

More Than A Carpenter: Trusting The Bible (3)

The third sermon in this series is devoted to understanding who Jesus is by answering the question, "Can we trust the Bible?" Most of what we know about Jesus comes from the Bible, so this is important to consider. Several elements come together to create the Bible, 66 books divided into the Old and New Testaments, written by many authors over a long period of time. Can we trust a book compiled in this way? Again and again, over time, archaeology agrees with the Bible and proves its accuracy. Also, scripture is consistent with itself, even though written by different authors. We look at when it was written, who wrote it and other variants. We ask if history agrees with the Bible. This sermon offers more than enough evidence that we can trust the Bible and the God of the Bible. With this in mind, how will we respond?
