The Ideal King

The U.S. Constitution requires that the president be born in this country. That theme also appears in this ancient counsel from Moses to the Hebrews: “Be sure to appoint over you the king the Lord your God chooses. He must be from among your own brothers” (Deut. 17:15).
Moses has some other ideas that might work in the politics of today. They are instructions to a people, recently enslaved and liberated, about how they should select their leaders and treat them. Moses also leaves some great advice to the kings that will one day reign over Israel. History would be different if they had followed that advice!
