Hidden Victory

This week's sermon

Jesus defeated dark powers by taking on humanity and drawing the fire of evil forces. He is Christus Victor, our victorious hero.

Death and Satan made a just claim on humanity because of our disobedience to God’s law. Jesus hid His divinity in humanity. When dark powers brought death to Jesus, they thought they had won. But more was happening than met the eye. Jesus, as man, could suffer death; but He was without sin and so was not justly subject to death. The claim of death was false. Satan took the bait and swallowed the hook. Now there is a new just claim—Jesus’ just claim to be recompensed for the wrongful death he suffered. He transfers that claim to all who call on His name.

About The Cross Series

There is no more central symbol of Christianity than the cross. Paul declares the cross the very core of the Gospel. The Gospel writers Matthew, Mark, Luke and John spend a third of their time on the passion, crucifixion, death and resurrection of Jesus. How we understand the Cross of Christ changes everything about how we understand God, the world—even life itself. When we consider all that Jesus did there, we stand amazed.
