Transformation Versus Conformity

Romans 12:1-2

"(1) Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God - this is your true and proper worship. (2) Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing, and perfect will."

"Transformation Versus Conformity"

1. Worship: Our Response to God

a.) Living persons offering themselves
          - No substitutes
b.) Worship involves your participation
          - You are engaged, not entertained
c.) Worship involves the whole of life
          - Not just one hour a week, but a lifestyle
          - A new way of thinking, acting, being with and for God

2. New Life Equals New Outlook

a.) God's ways are perfect
          - Reflection of God's character
b.) Prayer is the "work" of the Christian
          - Discipline to show up for work each day
          - Focus on becoming reliable, productive
c.) Acting "Christianly" is a privilege
          - Honor God by acting honorably
          - Not a requirement, but an act of devotion
          - Living for God's applause, not humanity's applause

3. Avoiding Conformity

a.) Blending in versus bearing witness
          - Standing out with humility, respect
          - Courage to say and act in faith
b.) Live confidently in your new identity
          - Quiet confidence versus arrogant insecurity
          - You are not alone - God is in you, the body of Christ is beside you
c.) Seeing beyond self
          - The transformative gift of seeing God, ourselves, and the world from God's point of view
