How To Lose a Crowd

There is no shortage of opinions. Some say the church has become dead and irrelevant to the 21st century. Others say that the church has become too focused on the gospel message and not focused enough on acts of compassion in the community. There is a lot of truth in those statements. And there is a lot to be learned about growing this local body of believers. I do believe church growth is essential and biblical, if you look at the book of Acts.

Overcoming the Fear of Man

I would say that the number one fear people face, if you could boil them all down, is a fear of man. This is probably my number one fear. I am, by nature, a people-pleaser. I’m a guy who likes people to like me. This can be a good trait at times, especially as a young and unproven pastor in a church. But it can also be a crippling thing for a leader, for a husband, for a father. Because we often crave the approval and support of others more than we crave God’s favor.

Naomi, a Portrait of Enduring Faith

As we set aside this day to honor mothers, a lot of preachers wrestle with the best text to preach. Because while mother’s day can be a wonderful holiday, it can also be bittersweet. Some of you have not had the blessing of being mothers. Others of you have lost mothers recently and you’re still feeling that pain. And still there are some here who have had complicated relationships with their mothers.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread-Part Three

Let’s review how Jesus got here so we can understand the gravity and the meaning of the words that follow. Tired and weary from six months of nonstop ministry of miracles, baptizing, and teaching, Jesus and his disciples tried to get away into a remote place near the restful and beautiful Sea of Galilee. But the crowds wouldn’t let him. They followed him to that remote place. So Jesus, who had compassion on those who were seeking him, continued his teaching. Then, he took a little boy’s lunch and fed 5,000 men, probably 20-30,000 individuals. He was at the height of his popularity here. In fact, he was so popular, they wanted to make Jesus king.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread-Part Two

So when Jesus spoke to these people, he spoke in their language. Bread and water were the currency they understood. And therefore his miracle of feeding the thousands with simple loaves and fishes was not just the sign that He was something greater than a man.

The Greatest Thing Since Sliced Bread-Part One

.......Then, in a stunning move, Jesus tamped down the crowd’s expectations of him to be king, sending them away and sending the disciples to the other side of Galilee, mainly to avoid getting caught up in the Kingdom fervor. Jesus’ kingdom, remember, was and is not of this world. His first mission was to be the sacrifice for sins. One day he’ll come back and be, not only the king of the Jewish nation, but the King of the World. He will set up His Kingdom.

Jesus, Dead or Alive?

The Ultimate Skeptic 2,000 years ago, there was another skeptic. Not only was he a skeptic of the claims of Christ, he was an avid opponent of this new movement called, Christianity. This man’s name was Saul.

It Is Finished

In 700 B.C. the ancient prophet Isaiah peeled back a new scroll and wrote these words: 5 But he was wounded for our transgressions; he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed. 6 All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned every one to his own way; and the LORD hath laid on him the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:5-6 (KJV)

The Lessons of the Sea

Let’s remember that Jesus had just finished feeding the 5,000 or rather, the 30,000 or more multitude on the hillside. From this we know Jesus was working on the faith of the disciples. The message to them was this: bring to me what little gifts and talents you have and see what I will do thru you to change the lives of people. The disciples wouldn’t realize this and understand this until after Jesus rose again and after the Holy Spirit visited them on Pentecost.

The Seeds of 5K Faith

The feeding of the 5,000 is one the most popular stories in the Bible. It’s a story we know very well. And in the writing of John’s gospel, we have to assume it’s a story that John’s readers knew very well, because it is the only miracle, besides the Resurrection, recorded in all four Gospels.
