Divine Intervention – Book of John, 1:19-34 – Who Are You?
1) A Supernatural
a. Miraculously born of devout parents (Luke 1)
b. He was clearly sent by God: John 1:6; Mark 1:2-3
c. His life was predicted by the prophets: Malachi 3:1; Isaiah 40:3
d. His message was simple: Acts 19:4
2) A Successful Response (Matthew 3:5-6)(Luke 7:29-30)
a. John 1:19 This stirred up the religious establishment
b. Many hoped or thought He was the Messiah
c. The religiously powerful were threatened. Every great work of God threatens those who crave power and status over true faith.
3) A Stedfastness of Message – John 1:20-27
a. He came in the Spirit of Elijah
b. He refused to claim that He was Messiah, Elijah, or the Prophet
c. He had breathtaking humility.
d. He had unbroken commitment.
4) A Savior Who Came – John 1:28-34
a. Jesus Christ was the spotless lamb
i. The embodiment of every animal sacrifice
ii. Predicted in the Old Testament
iii. Fulfilling the requirements of Exodus
b. John’s baptism of Jesus
i. Confirmed Jesus as Messiah and signaled approval by the father
1. Jesus was the perfect lamb
ii. Confirmed Jesus as the embodiment of the law
1. Jesus kept the ceremonial washings and cleansings.
c. John’s ministry was to point others to the Savior.
i. Behold Your Savior
