Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 42

Originally there was the Torah. This was what God gave to Moses. According to Orthodox Jewish belief, the Written Law that Moses received from the Lord is only part of God’s revelation. Another Law was revealed as well, and handed down orally through generations. At some point a rabbi thought that it would be a good idea to write down the oral law so that it could be preserved for generations to come. This written version of the Oral Law is called the Mishnah. The Mishnah contains what Jesus calls the heavy or the hard burdens or opinions that the teachers added on to the Talmud. Over the years other teachers wrote commentaries on the Mishnah which as you now know was the written account of the Oral Law (The Talmud). The Torah was about 530 pages long, while the Mishnah is 36 VOLUMES in length. Many of the controversies between the Pharisees and Jesus that are recorded in the Scripture have to do with their differing interpretations of the place and purpose of the Oral Law.

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 41

Satan deceives and distracts and convinces people that they have no need for a savior because they haven’t done anything to deserve hell. And he does that through false religions. He convinces them that the Bible is just a book of fables or moral lessons or he convinces them that it is within their own power to gain access into heaven.

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 40

The existence and welfare of the human race is dependent upon light. Although we may not consciously appreciate and thank God for light in general, when it is lacking for an extended period of time we certainly feel the effects of the darkness. It is more difficult to exist within darkness. It takes more effort, it takes more time, it takes more concentration, and everything is “slower” in darkness; we lose our moorings.

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 39

A blessing was a public declaration of a favored status with God. Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God (meaning who hear the gospel of Jesus Christ and repent and are saved) and keep it (who pursue a course of life within the blessing of their salvation)!

Reminders: 1) We were hopelessly lost. 2) The Law can't save us and our works can't save us either. 3) Jesus redeemed and rescued us.
