Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 8

Doctor Luke documents an event that began 40 days prior to Christ’s public ministry. Following Jesus’s baptism God calls him to the wilderness. We see a striking similarity in Christ’s testing in the wilderness of Judea and the testing of the Israelite in the desert for 40 years. Where as God was preparing Israel to receive the covenant of the law through Moses as recorded in the book of Exodus, God was preparing the entire world to receive the covenant of grace through the suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ as recorded in the book of Luke.

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 7

Doctor Luke records a miraculous event in the third chapter at the Baptism of Jesus. At that time the heavens were opened, the Holy Spirit descends (in the form of a dove) and God the Father speaks. Luke begins to build his case to prove that Jesus was indeed the fulfillment of the Messianic prophecies. He begins by establishing the legitimacy of the birth of Christ through His genealogy.(Luke 3:23-38)

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 5

It is only fitting that as we began our four week study preparing us for the Christmas season and the birth of Christ, we should end the Christmas season celebrating the completion of Christ’s ministry by observing the last supper on New Years’ Eve. The Exodus from Egypt was a pivotal event in the life of the nation of Israel. As the Jew’s looked back upon the passover and exodus from Egypt as proof of God’s love and provision for them, those same events were acting as prophecies concerning the birth, death, and resurrection of their future Messiah. God layered prophecy after prophecy within those events and then created ceremonial laws to be a personal reminder for His people as well. When we look at the Bible in its totality it is hard for us to miss the many references to Christ.

Preparing the Way for Jesus, Part 4

There are five key players in this epic biblical drama. The drama centers upon the forty days immediately following the birth of Christ which culminates in the dedication of Jesus at the temple in Jerusalem. The players are: 1. Mary, the mother of Jesus 2. Joseph, the husband of Mary 3. Baby Jesus 4. Simeon, a divinely chosen bystander 5. Anna, a prophetess All five are considered to be righteous in the eyes of God. Righteousness, in the old testament is synonymous with a great and consistent obedience to the law.
