Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire

There is an old saying, "Out of the Frying Pan and Into the Fire. In this message on Amos 5:18-27, we will see that the Northern Kingdom of Israel was longing for the "Day of the LORD". They were convinced that God would deliver them from all their enemies on this great day. What they failed to realize was that they were on the wrong side of God's Day. It is a Great and Terrible Day, and they were on the terrible side of God's wrath. God has established a Day of Christ. It is a great day for the people of God, a day we can experience when we turn from our sin and find forgiveness and a satisfying of God's wrath. Don't get caught on the Terrible Side of human history.

Seek the Lord and Live

During the reign of Jeroboam I, Israel abandoned the LORD and set up false idols in Bethel and Dan. All of Israel’s kings continued this practice, including Jeroboam’s namesake, the current king. In seeking evil gods, Israel became morally and spiritually bankrupt. But when God sent prophets to rebuke them, they despised the messengers and loathed the message to seek the LORD and live. Do we honor God’s message and messengers, or do we despise the word of the LORD? What are the consequences of our spiritual deafness? Are we seeking God and seeking Jesus' grace?

Prepare to Meet Your God

Pastor Steve Palm's sermon “Prepare to Meet Your God” on 21 Oct 18 from the sermon series “Amos-God’s Roar for Justice and Mercy” – In Amos 4 we see that Amos prophesies that a day is coming soon when God will send famine, drought, blight and pestilence, as warnings of His displeasure. But God’s people would prove deaf to every warning. The final warning is the most severe of all… “Prepare to meet your God.” In what ways is God warning us? Are we prepared to meet Him?

The Lion Roars

For centuries, the men of Israel perpetrated social injustice and evil, and their wives spurred them on. And for many years, they prospered until their houses were as great as their evil. It seemed like the ride would never end, and then the Lion of Judah roared. We hear the same roar in Jerusalem, as Jesus confronted the hypocrisy and injustice of His generation and roared like a lion. Can you hear God’s roar today concerning social injustice?
