Gripped by Grace

We usually love getting things that we don’t expect. Those unexpected good things, whether little or big, bring joy and happiness to us. They make our lives a little easier to live, if only for a little bit. But often, we struggle with getting things that we know we don’t deserve. Even getting too much change back at the store tugs at our conscience a little bit. Even a nice comment or a nice card from someone for something we know we didn’t really do makes us feel a little guilty. We want to try to pay them back, or at least earn it. That’s why so many people have a hard time understanding and accepting the grace of God. It is not just that it is unexpected. It is that it is undeserved, and we know it. In fact, we know we deserve something completely different. So today, we are taking a look at God’s grace and seeing the way that God’s great undeserved gift to us as undeserving people changes our lives.

You Can Believe It

News travels fast. So it was with the news of the exodus of Israel with Egypt. But along the way, it became an opportunity for God to make his name famous to others with the result that people believed. It was news that you can believe.

Rumbles of War

The journey through the desert provides many opportunities to trust God. But trust is rarely alone. When God provides, he usually calls his people to act. Yet even in acting, they must depend on God. When Israel encounters the Amalekites, they cannot simply sit back and do nothing. God calls them to assemble an army and fight, and when they do, he fights for them.

Water From the Rock

Sometimes the tests keeping coming. Or at least that's what it seems like. In those times, we are tempted to doubt God, to complain, and to whine. Yet in the midst of it, God is showing us ourselves while proving himself strong.

What Is It?

Hunger is a powerful force in our lives. Hungry people get cranky. And when they get cranky, they start complaining. It becomes hard to think about anything else. Hunger seems the only thing on our mind, and until that hunger is satisfied, nothing else will be accomplished. The worse it gets, the worse the world around us looks, until finally, even bad things look good. Today, we see the second in a series of three occasions when God’s people, the Israelites, experience a lack of something that they need for their journey. Their anger is directed at Moses and Aaron, the human leaders because the people view them as the cause of their trouble. Their memories of Egypt involve buckets full of meat and as much bread as they could eat. Now they feel on the edge of death in the desert, and they complain. But God has not left them. He will answer their complaining with grace and provision to show them that He is still their God, even in the desert of hunger.
