The LORD is my Shepherd

David uses two metaphors to describe the character and nature of God. The first one is that of a loving shepherd, the second is that of a welcoming host. Both of these metaphors come together to tell us one extremely important truth: that you can trust God because of who He is.

Him We Proclaim

As I dreamed about having a pastoral Ministry, a particular text of scripture gripped my heart. This passage of scripture sums up the kind of minister I desire to be, the kind of ministry I desire to have, and the kind of people I would desire us to be.

An Empty Exchange

1 Samuel 12 is all about an exchange. Israel had something but it didn’t perform the way they thought it should. It didn’t look just right compared to those around them. So they demanded something different. And they got it along with a stern warning from the grizzled old prophet Samuel. The only question was whether or not they would listen. So today we listen in on the speech of a man who had seen a lot and heard a lot and it gives us a chance to examine our own hopes. Will they satisfy? Will they do what we want? Or will we make an empty exchange?

The Beginning is Not the End

“Don’t count your chickens before they hatch” the old saying goes. It’s pretty good advice because a lot of things can change in a hurry. And a lot more things can change over time. That’s why the world is full of what have been called a “flash in the pan.” They are here for a second, but they don’t last. The bad new is that the beginning is not the end. Just because you are doing well now does not mean you will do well at the end. But the good news is the same: The beginning is not the end. Just because you are doing poorly now doesn't mean you will do poorly at the end. The grace of Christ in the gospel gives hope to all of us. Partake of it now while you have a chance.

Be Careful What You Pray For Because You Might Get It

Prayer is something that almost every one does. People who haven't been in church in years still find reasons to pray because they recognize there is something bigger than us out there who can do things and fix things. Yet as my mother used to tell me, Be careful what you pray for because you might get it. Today, we see how God answers the prayers of Israel and in so doing starts them down a road that is going to end very badly. And all this because they did not listen.
