Two Enduring Questions

Life is filled with questions, most of which we do not even think about; they are simply a part of our life. We ask questions like “what time shall I get up in the morning?” Or “How many times can I hit the snooze and still make it to work on time?” Then “What shall I wear?” (and there’s a bunch of questions built into this one). Then we ask, “What’s the weather going to be like today?” and “What should I have for breakfast?” And before you know it, the questions just pile on. In fact, every act of our lives is the answer to some question. Many of our questions are minor questions – like food or color of our outfit. Some are more major—like which car we buy or what job we take. But there are some fundamental questions that have life altering impact that I want to talk to you about today. These are two enduring questions and the answers you give will determine the course of your life. They are questions that we all must answer, and we must answer them every day.

Something Worth Suffering For - Part 1

Suffering is something most people try to avoid, and with good reason: It’s not very comfortable. It often causes pain. It makes life hard. It affects almost everything we do. And if we can avoid all that, we certainly want to. We will do almost anything in order to avoid suffering. But there are some times that suffering is necessary for a greater outcome. In those times, we still don’t like the suffering, but we understand there is a greater purpose and that helps us to endure. Today, we return to the book of Colossians where we see that the Apostle Paul actually rejoices in suffering. It’s not because he likes it. It’s rather because he sees something very important that God is doing through his suffering. And because Paul sees the greater purpose, he can endure the suffering with joy. In so doing, he teaches us about the work of God that is worth whatever it costs us, and he challenges us to have the same mindset that he does.

An Unholy Cow

The feeling of being lost, of being scared, of being disillusioned with life is troublesome to us. In those moments we turn to whatever we can think of that might give us back our sense of security and hope. A drug addict might turn back to his drug. An alcoholic might turn back to her alcohol. A work addict might pour himself more into his work. A child might act out. A spouse might lash out in anger, or withdraw in fear. Today we see an occasion in the life of Israel where their fear and disillusionment led them to do something that should have been unthinkable. Having seen God’s great power and presence with them, they turned back and learned a hard lesson that God is not to be trifled with. His presence is not to be doubted, not to be looked for apart from the way that He has said He would be found.

Laws About Worship

Religions are known for their rituals and special days. From the beginnings of humanity, every culture and people have developed ways to act out their religion and to pursue their gods. In Israel’s case, as the chosen people of the one true and living God, their rituals, special days, and forms of worship were not to be developed on their own. They were rather to be received from God and acted out in faith. Today, in our final talk about the Law of Moses in this section of Exodus, we see some of the regulations that God gave for Israel’s worship of God. Once again, in these regulations we see something about the character and work of God that demanded this response from his people, and we consider what our worship should look like in the church based on what God told his ancient people Israel.
