These are some pretty rough verses. There is no way to hedge around what Jesus is teaching. He is teaching us that we are to serve others. We are to be the slave of all. This is what it means to be a disciple of Jesus Christ. Jesus did not come to be served but to serve. So, we should do the same thing. We must address the same attitude that kept the disciples from serving others and that is pride. Pride is opposed to faith because it demonstrates how much we love ourselves. When we are willing to be a servant to others, we are demonstrating that we love God more that ourselves and what others think of us.
